Default Question about meds day of surgery and post op

I'm assuming that one can't take meds the day of surgery and likely shortly after. What does that mean in terms of birth control pills? Do I just end up skipping a few days, or do I need to go off the pill longer? Obviously, I will be asking the surgeon this but I was curious what others had experienced. I also take Metformin (2 pills twice a day) and am wondering how that might be handled?
Thank you in advance for sharing your experience with this.

I only take anti anxiety meds and I take them at night, so I was able to take them the night before my surgery, but then I wasn't allowed anything the day of my surgery at all (not even water). The morning following my surgery, after my leak test, I was given fluids to consume and my anti anxiety meds. Every doctor is different, though.

I take oral estrogen, I was taken off of it 2 weeks prior to surgery and told to stay off of it until 4 weeks post op, due to risk of causing blood clots. Just FYI, my paperwork included birth control meds as no - no 2 weeks out as well. I'm past that part of my life, but definitely check with your surgeon!

if the pill can be crushed up the doctors will tell you to do it that way. pain meds the day off will be given by i.v.. at home you'll be given some good stuff probably, i can't remember what pain med i had but it virtually got rid of the pain for the time it said it would. Loved that stuff. I had to take a nexium and something else, can't remember. But my regular pills i had to crush or pull them apart and take them that way for 3 weeks.

I was told to stop any kind of hormonal birth control pill at least 2 WEEKS before the surgery and not to begin taking them for at least 1 month after. Their reasoning is that hormonal birth control increases the risk of blood clots and those are SOOOOO dangerous. As far as other medications, I was told to take my morning medications with a sip of water day of surgery. They will have a list of everything that you take and will give you equivalents by IV while in the hospital.

I was on 4-500 mg metformin and 1 40-mg Actos and didn't take the day of surgery at all nor was I given any in the hospital, they did do blood checks every few hours but since I wasn't consuming much there was no need. I was told to crush or chew pills for 3 months after surgery which I did for maybe a month no problems.

Just ask your doctor! I have been able to swallow any meds as soon as I was cleared to drink day 2, no problem. (I thought things had to be crushed, but doctor said no.)
