    Default Diet Coke....?

Okay I'm 19 days out from surgery and I'm DYING for a diet coke! I had a 3 week pre-op liquid diet so it's been at least 6 weeks since I had any pop...but I'm dying!

I also just started a job at the Police as a 911 call taker and dispatcher...meaning I'm waking up WAY too early in the morning, and I don't drink coffee.

Has anyone else been drinking pop? I haven't started but I want to. Just a bit. I can even make it a bit flat I don't care. I'm just not sure how I'm going to do my 18:00 - 06:00 hour shifts without a little help.....

No. No soda. A small sacrifice for a big reward. We ALL have given up stuff we desire: chocolate, sweets, soda. But we all KNEW this was part of the deal when having the surgery. Your stomach needs six months to fully heal. Be responsible and avoid carbonation.

NO SODA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gas will kill you and expand your pouch. The sugar and empty fillers are bad, and the artificial sugar is the worst!!! If you ask any Dr they will all say NO SODA!!!!

I haven't had soda since my surgery back in January, but even if I would have some, I'd have it now, not as soon as your thinking. Your fresh out of surgery, the carbonation could cause mild pain (so I hear) and honestly, I just wouldn't so soon. Tough it out, have a vitamin water instead.

Try Crystal light energy but in my personal opinion soda would be a huge mistake. From what I've been told it would hurt and could stretch your stomach.

I wasn't allowed to have caffeine though until 2 months out.

No soda. No caffeine at all. At 2 months I was told caffeine was ok but only in small amounts. Try changing your sleeping habits and you will feel more awake.

I was told I could have one cup of coffee, but no soda. Doc said the carbonation could hurt the new stomach, and even cause an ulcer. I am a huge diet soda addict. I would wake up, drive to QT for my monster size drink, and come home to get ready for work. Then I would stop for another after work. Obviously, it got me where I am today, fat. Today is my FIRST DAY without it, and it won't be fun, but I will do it.

Don't do it! You'll regret it.. I've heard multiple things on here. Some surgeons say it will stretch the pouch; others say no but I've heard it's very painful!

No soda for me for 13 months. I will never drink it again. I was so addicted to it and I'm afraid if let myself have it again I'll start letting myself have other things I don't need. Plus I think it's weird that everyone that I see drinking diet soda is over weight!

Jennyk, I can certainly feel your desire for a soda, but just think how long you've been without one now and you've made it this far! Good for you!!! Don't think about the long term, the forever, the never having soda again, think about how long it's been now since you've gone without it. Think positive about the change. I, like many others, am/was a huge Diet-Coke-Aholic. I'm not sleeved yet, but at my doctor's visit #2 (out of 3), I walked out and told myself that since I'm preparing for this surgery and such a serious lifestyle change, I needed to prepare now. I had started small transitions before this point, but this was a big one... no soda from that point on. It's been 3 weeks ago tomorrow since I had one and I'm filling myself up with vitamin water zero, propel zero, milk, ice tea and, of course, water. I guess this is the point of me reminding you what an inspiration I find in you since you haven't had soda for so long now! Keep going girl... you got this. You can do it... look how far you've come!!!

I do drink diet soda very occasionally, but I was never an addict for it (in fact hated any soda drink until I was about 20), so it's not an issue for me. If you've had a previous addiction, probably best to to avoid.

Interestingly I remember when I was younger that medical students at my university claimed that carbonation stimulated the pylorus to open meaning things would move through the stomach quicker. They used to suggest mixing alcohol with carbonate mixers to speed up getting drunk. Have no idea if that is true, but if so I wonder if that's a reason to avoid carbonation - we don't want things moving through our stomachs quickly - same as why we shouldn't eat/drink at same time.

I've not experienced any discomfort, but I only have had a few sips ever. Didn't try it at all until more than 3 months out.

No you're not dying. You don't need it. You are just out of major surgery where you have undertaken to change your life for the better. This is your equivalent of giving up smoking and seriously that stuff is a chemical soup that does you no good at all. No nutritional value and so soon out of surgery, just plain dangerous.

Think about the positive changes and benefits and take a deep breath. You will survive this temporary craving and be enjoying a new body and a new life soon. Better than any soft drink you can swallow.
