Default October surgery - some days sitting on the fence

Hi. I'm a 52 year old woman with about 100+ lbs to lose. Weigh 260 and ideally should be around 140. Any of you that are around my age near the final stage of weight loss. I read that sleeve vs roux en y lose about 10% less, but is a much safer surgery. Trying to set realistic goals
My surgery should be late Sept / early Oct. I have to self pay because my insurance won't cover the surgery.

Can I lose 100 lbs with the sleeve ? What can I expect at 30, 60 and 90days of weight loss?

    Thank you for your help!

My doc says that you should be able to lose 60% if your exes weight. But I really think your results are directly related to what you put into it. I'm only 3 weeks out from sleeve surgery so I'm not sure where I will end up. But I'm hopeful to get to a normal BMI.

Statistics show that the average weight loss is 60% of your excess body weight. But keep in mind that is the average. Many people lose more and many people lose less. As with any tool, it only works if you use it.

The sleeve will work some if its on its own but you will reap a lot more of its benefits with a new sense of what to eat, how to eat, and how much to eat, along with exercise (cardio & weight training). But it is still up to us to do what we need to do to get to where we want to be.

I'd suggest not focussing on the numbers. Just do it, eat less and feel 10 years younger. The sleeve has undoubtedly given me back many years.

Maybe you can.....but can you maintain that weight loss without the sleeve? I've lost hundreds of lbs over the years and always put every one back on with some of their friends! The anticipation of surgery was far harder than the actual surgery itself. I went to my first weight loss surgery seminar in 2008. I finally had surgery 1/21/13, and that's my only regret! I've been lucky enough to have a text book surgery/recovery...I am 45, not 25 and I was very overweight/ obese. How I hate that word! I am 7 months post op liking pretty much like the rest of folks who don't panic when walking into a restaurant where the skinny hostess tries to get you to sit in a booth. I wore a pair of jeans for the first time in 10 years and my husband said I looked great.....if you have any questions at all....let me know. The only way I know I had surgery are the tiny scars on my stomach and I eat like a skinny girl! Love it!

My surgeon said to expect to lose 60% of my excess weight. My January 2012 consultation weight was 239, weight on surgery day (July 2012) was 226 and current weight is 139. I'm 49 years old and have had my share of stalls etc...but in the end I have no regrets and have lost 100% of my excess weight. My only current issue is skin elasticity, I'd love to have a tummy tuck, breast lift and arm lift if I could afford it. But the the health benefits outweigh the cosmetic issues by far. Good Luck!

Thank you all for your insight. One thing I found out is I shouldn't be typing at 1 or 2 in the morning. LOL. I am happy I started this journey, regardless of the pounds I lose, I will be a healthier person. I'm hoping the gallon zip lock bag that is completely full of meds will become non-existent. I wish everyone that is on this journey the best. I'm so thankful I found this site. God bless

Great job & congratulations! Do you feel like a new person? I started the low carb diet today. Struggling to find the right things to eat. Didn't prepare because waited until I had the right mindset. Eggs & a protein drink so far. Must put a grocery list together & throw away the crackers LOL. Probably also need to cook for myself & something different for the picky family. Thank you for your post!

It's hard for me to understand why anyone would think the bypass is safer. with the sleeve you don't lose the ability to absorb your food.
I'm signed up for surgery in Mexico on October 7. I have a lower BMI and can confuse myself thinking I'm not fat enough, but I have weighed 286 about a decade ago. I'm 66 and don't want to go back there and I don't want to be diabetic.
    I hope yours goes well
