Let's all remember that we're here to share our own personal experiences and to offer support and encouragement, not to judge anyone else's way of life. That being said, I am more than two and half years past my sleeve operation, and every morning I wake up resolved to stick to my eating plan. Some days I do; some days I do not. But at my last doctor's checkup two months ago, my doctor complimented me on holding my weight steady for two years now (since I stopped losing). So the key is to do what works for you. Some days my weight goes up three or four pounds, and then I get right back on plan and lose it again. That being said, I do enjoy my wine; and I drink it fully knowledgeable about what those calories and carbs are doing. I have found that only one or one and a half glasses is plenty to give me a pleasant buzz, and that's where I stop. Occasionally, I will have a real cocktail, but I try to avoid the ones with fruit juices or syrup to make them sweeter...a skinny girl cosmo or a vodka tonic is very enjoyable from time to time in the right company. It's not a substitute for good nutrition however, but we all go into this with our eyes wide open. My addictive tendencies come out around a bowl of popcorn, not around a bottle of wine. There is no such thing anymore as eating even one cookie, or one small serving of mashed potatoes, or one small slice of pie, or having one mojito, without guilt. But the guilt always motivates me to be better the next day, or to exercise longer the next time at the gym. Just keep life in balance, and we really can have it all.
Hi Danny;
I get it, a lot of our social time involves food or alcohol, that's what were are programmed with. Alcohol is a toughy though, it is empty calories and the sleeve gives you that boost you need to loose weight but you still have to be cautious of what you put in your stomach. I have a feeling it won't take nearly as much alcohol to get you drunk as it did before so be very careful about that. Sometimes it's hard in social situations to get away from having a drink but I'd stay away as much as you possibly can. It's going to take less to get you intoxicated and it's just empty calories. Now is the time to start rethinking what got you to the size you are now and what are you going to do in addition to the surgery to keep from going back to that weight. The surgery is not an easy fix, it's just a tool to help. I wish you luck and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
I had my first drink around 6 weeks. I used to drink the fruity fizzy drinks, but switched to something that has neither. Some whiskeys and vodkas have very little to no carbs. I normally only have one a week, and it's a small one at that. It does take me about 30+ minutes to drink it so I really haven't had the buzz affects any faster. I know it's empty calories, but I "budget" for them for that day. I also make sure that I drink extra fluids that day. We are all adults, and we do have to live with whatever choices we make.
