Just wondering of anyone has had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as their surgery for the gastric sleeve? My doctor suggests soing it this way....any opinions? Thanks!
When I had my surgery I didn't know I had a hernia. During the surgery my surgeon discovered the hernia repaired it at that time. From what I understand it is pretty typical to repair a hernia at the time of surgery. My chest was a little bit more sore because of this but only lasted to the next day. Hope that helps and good luck.
This is exactly what happened to me. I don't know how it would have felt without it, but my chest was sore, specifically my diaphragm. I had to sleep sitting up at an almost 90 degree angle for two nights, but after that, it only twinged. Considering my incisions didn't hurt at all, even with the sore chest, I didn't even have to use the percocets I was prescribed. My surgeon said if we had known I had it, he would have suggested I wait to have the hernia fixed until my WL surgery anyways. Easy job to do both, and only one procedure. If your doc suggests it, I'd definitely go with it.
I had mine repaired during surgery; we didn't even know I had the hernia. I called it by bonus surgery! I didn't feel anything extra pain wise with mine. I was glad it was corrected though. The doctor told me that if it had been ignored it would have effected my overall progress with my knew stomach. After I researched exactly what a hiatal hernia was it made sense. Basically your stomach has been sucked up partially into your esophagus; so you wont be able to have the sleeve without them fixing the hernia as well, because they take your stomach out to do the surgery. I hope this helps you out!!! I feel blessed to have been repaired! Good Luck!
I had the hernia repair with my sleeve surgery. My gastroenterologist found it when I had my endoscopy. It was the only part of my surgery that hurt. I had spasms in my esophagus. I had every pulmonary test to find out why I was in pain across my upper chest and alas...the hernia repair was the culprit. If I had to do it again, I would. Go for it and good luck!
I had my surgery last Monday...and already knew my Hernia was going to get repaired....didnt even know i had one until they did the EGD...and I cant even tell mine is repaired....its not a big deal IMO...go ahead and get it done and fixed and one less thing to worry about...I am doing great and have no ill effects from it.
Hello, I had the Hiatal Hernia repair and gallbladder removed with my Gastric Sleeve in March 2013. My recovery process was painful. I was off from work for six weeks and I needed it. The good thing is I got it all 3 completed at one time. I couldn't imagine going back into the hosptial for the other 2 procedures. My doctor said he does three procedures often. I am doing great now.
Good Luck to You!
