    Smile My Introduction

I am 59 years old. I have been interested in the gastric sleeve procedure for 5 years, but my insurance did not cover that procedure. It has recently added the procedure to its approved list. I have set up an appt with my internal medicine doctor on Monday. I have scheduled an appointment with a surgeon who does his surgeries at Baylor in Dallas for the 24th of this month. I have been disabled for 5 years and unable to work. I have Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, Congestive Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. I hope this procedure might extend my life. I am a little anxious as to whether I could survive the surgery, but will discuss it with my doctor on Monday.

Dianna, I was 58, almost 59, when I had my sleeve surgery almost two years ago. I have lost about 120+ pounds since then, and it has improved my health so much. I was on 3 different oral medications for diabetes at the time, and now take none. It has improved my hypertension. I weighed about 50 pounds more than you do, so I know where you are coming from. With all your comorbidities, the sleeve surgery can do a lot to help you get healthier.

For people like you and me, it's all about our health. I see so many people on this forum who are all about the way they look, and they are getting a sleeve surgery, starting out at the weight I am now, after almost two years. But I just wanted to be healthier so I can play with my grandsons. It has literally been a life saver for me.

My weight loss has slowed down considerably, and I am living a normal life now. I probably eat more than I should, but I am on an exercise program, and I feel a million percent better than I did. Best of all, I can get down on the floor to play with the boys (and, even better, I can get back up again!!!). Even if I never drop another pound, this surgery has been the best thing I have ever done for myself and for my family, too!

Good luck to you as you begin this process. Here's to your health!!

Diana, before surgery, you might want to have your "BUCKET" list of what you want to do after surgery. I know I completed a 1/2 marathon, this sounds hard and it is not. We just have to retrain our selves and good luck on the process. You are in good hands on this site.

I can't tell you all how much I enjoy reading your posts. It is so encouraging. I'm 58 and am scheduled for surgery in 3 days. I agree that it is all about being healthier for me. Right now I have problems walking. In the morning I have to think about what I have planned and decide if I can do all the required walking. Often when I get to the third item on my list I ask my husband if he would mind if I stayed in the car. I even plan around going places that have shopping carts because it is so much easier to walk when I have a cart.

Dianna - I know that we are both going to be feeling better soon!
