Hey all I was just wondering I have seen on some YouTube videos that people are still eating ice cream. My question is do any of you all have a small scoop from time to time? I thought ice cream would cause the dumping syndrome
Dumping syndrome is less common in sleeves, but some do get it. My downstairs neighbor who was sleeved says she ate about a half cup of ice cream every day while on her soft-foods only segment. I guess it depends on your body.
I don't think we experience dumping much...at least I never have. I haven't had ice cream at all. I don't eat anything sugary. I know it used to be a problem for me, so I don't even try it...I only eat protein for the most part, and if something has sugar in it (like my yogurt or peanut butter, I make sure its very low.)
I have not attempted to have ice cream. Pre-op I could sit down and eat half a gallon (while squirting chocolate syrup on each bite I took) without batting an eyelash. So for me it is a HUGE trigger food for bad eating behaviors.
Not only that I am sure ice cream is a slider food...meaning you can eat large amounts of it...and it is packed full of calories AND sugar.
Bottom line the last thing I want to do is self-sabotage.

Ok...my ice cream story...
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE peppermint stick ice cream. I searched high and low for it all Christmas season which is the only time they sell it...up around me anyway. Well I couldnt find it at all!!!
So...I got sleeved and went to the store and my kids asked me to pick up a ice cream that they liked when right next to it was peppermint stick ice cream...of course...that was my luck...
I bought it of course...not really sure why I did that but just one thing mentally I knew if I left it there in the store I would be upset for the next week. That night (I was about 2 weeks post op) I took a spoon and had a very very small scoop...only about a teaspoon. I put it in my mouth and let it just melt and it had to be the most heavenly thing I had ever had in my life. Over the next week I had a bite every few nights and I didnt experience any dumping...but that one bite took the craving away...when before I would eat half the container. It eventually was gone as everyone in my house loves it too.
So no...probably not the best thing I could have done...but it mentally let me know that I could still enjoy the treats that I used to...but it's amazing being satisfied with that one bite.
I wouldn't try I've cream only because its so full of fat, sugar and calories but that's me, I've never cared much for it.
As for the dumping thing, I have had it twice in my five weeks. I ate a couple bites of Mac and cheese kd, the first time I did it on purpose because it smelt and tasted soo good! Within 20 min I had the weird feeling of dizzy, sleepy, almost felt drunk. I didnt know what it was until I posted and someone told me it was dumping. The second time was the same food but it was a total accident. I just took a huge mouthful when I was dishing out my kids dinner without thinking. After I swallowed I came to and had a choice to try to throw it up or see what happens, well I chose to not throw up. About 30 min later I had a bad dumping where I felt like I had the severe flu! The runs, nausea, everything, was not fun. Hopefully I won't make that mistake again! I spoke to my doctors office yesterday to make an appointment for six week check up and the lady was shocked that I got dumping, apparently its very uncommon with sleeves. Never the less for me I will not tempt fait again.
I have eaten ice-cream. No problem. I don't eat it often because of the calories. Even though it is a slider food, I am satisfied to eat 1/4 a cup. I know it will take lots of exercise in the gym to burn that off so I had some and was done. It is not a trigger food for me.
My trigger food is chocolate. I still eat chocolate once in a while but I try to avoid high calories food during the winter. My body will not let go of fat during the winter.
I would stay away if portion control is your problem. You CAN eat ice cream on a sleeve (dumping is not very common), but you are only hurting yourself as you need to focus on getting the right amount of protein and liquids into your body.
My nutritionist said everything in moderation is how the skinny people live and denying yourself everything you love is a sure road to failure. That said I have always been all or nothing kind of person and am staying away from my trigger foods for now. Ice cream was never one of those is I have had a few bites in the last 6 months and it was great but easy to stop at a bite or two. Yeah!
I eat ice cream, but I have switched to Skinny Cow since the sleeve. it's absolutely delicious and doesn't bother my stomach at all. Then again, I am over a year post op.
I can say I did have ice cream as an early post op (regular full fat ice cream stuffed with goodies) and it didn't bother me then, either, but I avoided it just because if I was going to have a snack that was bad for me, I wanted to get more of a bang for my calories.

Morning of surgery: 2 2 0
I have had ice cream with no issues. Small amounts though. I have had more often the sugar free fudgcicles and fruit flavor (not real fruit flavor) popsicles.
Other then breads or foods that will absorb liquid and expand in my stomach I can and do eat most everything. I focus on portions and balanced health mix.

and as far as dumping syndrome goes YES i have had it. I got it on my son's birthday. I made him homeade vanilla cake with buttercream frosting. I wanted a piece so frickin' bad lol. i had a piece, and i had another...the second one killed me. I had the shakes, i felt like all i wanted to do was sleep but my heart was racing at the same time, its a really horrible feeling. thankfully though it is rare in people with sleeves and i have never had anything like that happen again, of course i never have had a million calories of sugar laden junk again since then haha.

I have had little bits of ice cream, both early on and now. I too believe that depriving myself of small tastes of something, actually sets me up for negative feelings. I swore that once I had the surgery, and progressed beyond the beginning stages; I'd eat small amounts of certain foods on certain occassions. So far, so good. I have maintained my loss, and continue to eat small treats from time to time. I do, however; concentrate on protein and healthy carbs for the most part. I have never experienced dumping syndrome I actually don't think I could eat a "whole ice-cream cone", and won't try.
