    Default Straw or no straw?

I have a question. The dietitian I met with before surgery said I couldn't use straws after surgery. I was sleeved last Friday, and I am looking over the discharge papers from the hospital. The notes from the bariatric nurse said I could use a straw after a few days. It seems as there is so much conflicting information out there. Just wondering what others have been told about straw usage.

    Thanks

I was given a water bottle with a straw as soon as I woke from surgery so I don't know.

My doctor explained that each person is different and that most of the rules given out are general. I don't always use a straw but I do sometimes and have never had a problem. Go ahead and try - you'll know quickly if it causes you more gas or discomfort!

    Good luck!

i still do not use a straw because of the extra air it introduces and makes me uncomfortable... you have to try to see what works for you.

I used a straw when I was 3 weeks post-op because it helped me take small sips and it didn't give me any trouble. I agree with what the others have posted, you might have to try using one and see how you feel.

It will be trial and error... I got some discomfort from using a straw really early on, but it definitely made slow sipping easier. I was fine after a couple weeks I think.

My doctor said no to straws because he feels you take more in with a straw than just sipping, and the amount you have in your mouth that way may cause you to overeat/overdrink and have issues with the sleeve.

I didn't use a straw right away (first couple of weeks) but then found I get drink easier with one. I had my surgery over 2 years ago and still find I can get more liquid in me with a straw. I still can not "guzzle" water so to consume enough through the day, a cup with a straw helps a lot!

I was told never that it creates extra air in the stomach. I have to admit I have been tempted especially after seeing all the sleevers that use one!
