Default eating and drinking at the same time?

    Hi,

I am about to have the sleeve and my dietician and doctor have said that sleeve patients are not to drink anything an hour before meals, an hour after meals, and for sure nothing during meals. They are having me practice this now and I am really struggling not drinking anything while I eat. Has anyone else been told this is what they need to do and if so what are your tips and tricks for getting by without liquids while eating? Thanks so much.

I know it's a hard habit to break. All our lives we have washed down our food. Seems like it's going to be hard at first.

It is a very hard habit to break. I still have that habit. I try to talk to the people that I am eating with at the time. If I am at home I do not get a drink with my meal. I would suggest that you start by not drinking with the meal and then start to take time away before and after in increments. Good Luck!

It is tough, but for me it hurts to drink when I eat so its a good reason not too!! - I cant have a glass on the table when I'm eating as my hand will just automatically go for it. But like any habit you can break it with perseverance, only takes 30 days (constant) to create or break a habit.
    Good luck

This is one of the things I have the hardest time with too. Three months have gone by and I still struggle with it. I wish I had practiced it before my surgery. Don't give yourself a hard time and remember it takes about 28 days to make a new habit. Practice, practice, practice! Good luck.

this was extremely difficult for me to do pre-op, but post-op it has been relatively easy to follow. but this could be because my doctor only mentioned 30 mins prior and 30 mins after, not an hour. but i generally wait 45-60 mins after because i feel full longer if i don't drink (causes me to eat less).

try to stick to moist foods so you don't miss out on needing a sip, and take your time eating. good luck!

I began the process by having a glass of water available, but just out of reach(requiring me to get up to get a drink). I found that this did help, now it is just something I never consider.
BTW I remember that my doctor suggested that we not order a drink with our meals when eating out and I follow that rule. I always have water on the table in case I choke, but the reward is eveythime I go out I save about $2.00.

I was also told not to drink 1 hour before meals and not to drink during meals. I was also told not to drink with a straw. The straw part was really hard for me because I drink iced tea all day long with a straw. However I did get used to drinking without the straw.
I had my sleeve on April 12, 2011. Also I have stage 5 kidney disease and one of the medicines I have to take is sodium citric acid and I have to drink this ( 6 ounces) 3 times a day. I drink this 30 minutes before meals and have had no problems. Also I occassionally take a sip or two when I eat, but just a sip.
There are many adjustments you have to make with the gastric bypass, lap band, or sleeve.
    Good luck to you.

Recognizing folks are different, I have not had trouble eating/drinking during meals. Now, I never drank a lot during meals before, either. But, it's not a problem for me to have water (or wine) with meals. I just don't drink very much.
