I worry about this too.... I love to gulp drinks.... And love to eat and drink at the same time. I'm sure it's hard.... Stick with what you're suppose to do... And like they say, it does get better!!

I'm only 6 weeks out, and while I can't full-on gulp, I can take several medium size swallows in a row when on an empty stomach. I'd say I'm getting around100ml at a time withoutany difficulty (just under half a cup). I don't do this often, but every now and again when I'm thirsty, I forget and just drink it down like that.

I'm six months out, approximately, and although I cannot gulp massive amounts of liquid, I can get all I need of non carbonated drinks. For instance, I take Propel zero water with me when walking, 16.9 oz. I will drink it completely during the hour I'm outside. If that isn't enough, when I get back home I drink another in about 5 minutes. At this point, it seems only volume is limited, speed has mostly returned to both liquids and foods of all types.
The only true restrictions I feel I have left are the carbonated drinks, which is no sacrifice at all, because they are no longer very tasty to me when I drink them when no alternative exists, and ibuprofen. If I had any regrets, I would center them on that pill for pain relief!
Anyone who can't live without NSAIDs shouldn't have this surgery!
I haven't had my surgery yet, but I have been practicing taking little sips for the last few days or so. I am so guilty of chugging a bottle of water or taking too big drinks, I actually do it so often that sometimes it goes down the wrong tube and I am coughing and sputtering all over the place. I definately don't want to do that after surgery, I imagine it will be quite painful.
Scooter, you mention that you can no longer take NSAIDS, why is that? I am curious because I do have severe degenerative joint disease in my right hip and I take Advil quite regularly. My surgeon said I would eventually be able to take it (3-4 months after surgery) again. I thought you just had to avoid it prior to and right after surgery because of the blood thinning thing.
I've got a question about straws. I drink alot of water , usually 6 or 7 litres a day, and I enjoy my water. I cant stand Gatorade or other drinks but guess im going to have to suck it up and drink em. I was told that because of gas you cant have straws. Wouldnt it be easier to get your sips in with a straw? Also for those with sensative teeth the cold drink is a worry. Anyway, I didn't hear anyone on here talk about gas from straws, but I know that my local girls who had the surgery are told no straws. what did you all hear about straws?
I was told straws are okay as long as they don't cause additional gas issues. The dietician said if a straw didn't bother us before that it will likely be okay after surgery; but, if a straw bothered us before that we likely would not be able to use a straw after surgery. As far as ibuprofen/Advil is concerned, my surgeon told me that as long as I take Prilosec (Omeprazole) with it, that it would be fine. I have not tried any of this since I'm only into the 2nd week post op, though.
You will be able to drink larger swallows of liquids the farther out from surgery you are. I cannot gulp but I can take several medium swallows in a row if I am really thristy. I too am interested in the ibuprofen, I had knee surgery and when the weather changes I can forcast it.......I miss ibuprofen the most. I have had some joint pain in my hips and thighs and my general doc seems to think it is from no longer having as much strain from the weight. Anyway tylenol dosen't cut it for me. I am trying tylenol with over-the-counter topical creams-ick!
I have bad arthritis in alot of joints and was taking max doses of Nsaids but my doctor gave me a RX for trama-dol hcl 50MG. I can take up to 8 a day. They work and are not an Nsaid. They work like an narcotic without actually being one and I have no side effects. Easy on stomach, non drowsy, works for me.
