I am from the "respect the pouch " kinda way of thinking and soda is not in there. I have heard it would stretch the pouch and it would hurt so I gave mine up about 4 mnths before surgery.
It is not going to ruin anything IMO because the gas goes up or down....but anyway I have not had any but a sip here and there actually had a sip of husbands and everytime think WHY did I ever drink this crap. It really has no flavor.
I have had some coke when I was three months out. I wanted it when I was on the plane. I poured it over ice and stirred it to release some of the bubbles. I really don't believe bubbles can stretch the stomach. It just made me burp. I don't really drink it on a regular bases though since I was never addicted to it.
I've had just a couple tiny sips of my hubby's when we've gone out to eat, or eating in the car. It's normally a very tiny sip. When I drank pop, I usually only had one a day, so I wasn't addicted to them. Sometimes I miss it and the caffeine, I do get tired of water with Mio or Crystal Light, but I do think giving up pop back in Jan helped me lose my 25# before surgery. So, I will never go back to drinking it full time, but a sip here and there, will do me just fine.
I gave it up the day before surgery and haven't had soda or anything else carbonated since. Whether or not it actually can stretch your pouch, for me the truth is prior to surgery I was going through about 1.5 12 packs of diet Coke a week. I honestly haven't really missed it at all since surgery, not even in the early post-op stages. More importantly to me though, phosphoric acid can be bad for your bones - decreases bone density. Of course this takes quite a bit of time to happen, but I figure since I'm not really missing it, its not going to hurt just to avoid it completely either.

Morning of surgery: 2 2 0
Just a couple of sips and I don't want anymore, so it hasn't been a problem for me. I went on vacation last week and sometimes at night in a restaurant, the choices are limited, so I will order one, pay the 2.50, and just have a few sips when I can't stand the idea of just water.
About six months post surgery I started having a little bit in the morning, over ice so it flattens out, and that took care of my daily caffiene. If you drink it straight from the can or in a glass straight from the bottle, it hurts your stomach. I don't know about stretching, but my doctor said after about six months you can have it flat over ice. I don't drink coffee so I always had a coke in the morning. Moderation and no chugging is the key, at least for me. =)
The point is: why push it? Wait until you've reached your target weight before experimenting. I haven't had a soda for a year now. I cut it out when I started my pre-op classes. I have tried a sip or two of my wife's; it no longer tastes good to me at all, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything.
Now that Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale looks awfully good, but I'm waiting until I reach my target weight before I even touch alcohol and even then I'll start with wine rather than a carbonated beverage.
