what do u think...does age make a difference with how fast u lose weight after getting sleeved? if so how and why?
I think age definately has a bearing on weight loss . There are also other issues to consider, such as metabolism, health issues, menopause, ability to exercise, etc. I'm over 50, hypothyroid, sluggish metabolism and joint issues. It has been harder for me, but I refuse to give up, since my health improves with every pound I lose.
I lost weight very easily in my 20s and teens. However, now I have the above issues that scgal has and I'm in my midforties. I see women older than me losing weight faster than me every day on this forum. That's why I say it's individual. Patience, I'm learning, is one of the most important parts of weight loss regardless of where you are. People who lose 20 or 30 lbs. a month think they should lose more just like those who are losing 5 lbs a month. And no matter where you are most likely you will experience a stall...best to plan for it and understand it's part of the process.
I am 59 and have had good weight loss. Not as fast as some and not as slow as others. I agree with Dee, it depends on your own individual set of circumstances. I'm like scgirl, hypothyroidism etc and still the weight is coming off. I have lost 51 lbs in 5 months and 9 preop, so I am the average 10 lbs a monther that most on this forum turn out to be. I really love the tool that this sleeve is for me.
Everyone's metabolism slows down as they age, so for most folks losing weight goes slower as you get older. However you can quicken the weight loss by following all the guidelines we discuss on this forum (same ones your doc also uses): EXERCISE, drink lots of water, protein first/low carb, track your foods, and EXERCISE. Can't say it enough, because it *works*. There are some who are able to lose well without following those guidelines, but I didn't want to fail, so I follow them!
I am 45 I had my surgery Aug 24 2011..By January I had lost 115 pounds and no more since...still hovering at 200

~ doesn't think she'll ever reach her original weight, no matter HOW hard she tries. Hell, let's face it, 8lb 10oz is not very realistic is it?
I definitely feel age is a factor. It is a known fact that metabolism slows down with age meaning we need less calories just to maintain. Plus the older we get the more diets we have been on. The more diets we have been on the quicker our bodies realize what we are trying to do and goes into starvation mode and tries to hang onto our fat stores and slows down our metabolism more. Which means we just have to work harder and exercise more, but the weight will come off. Just a little slower. I'm 64 and I've been on a hundred different diets, so I know I have to spend 1 to 2 hours a day in the pool to lose the fat stores. But it is working.
I might be able to shed some light, as I am 23 years old and am 18 days post-op. Since the start of my pre-op diet, I have gone from 340 to 296 (just weighed today) and I am excited to see the amount of weight that has come off so far. I also understand that not only am I young, but I am also a male, so I do believe that age and gender are a factor. I hope this helps.
Well I am gonna be a turd here :-).... That is an excuse... No serious age does have a issue ,but I believe the more u exercise the less that becomes a problem. For people with joint issues and have trouble exercising I suggest water exercises. It takes pressure off and it still gives you good work out. My mother in law has MS and alot older then me and she can kick my butt on the exercise. Her Dr told her unless she keeps pushing through and keeps her weight off she will stop functioning. She has become a mentor to me that I have no excuse.
I believe that age has absolutely NO bearing on weight loss when it comes to the sleeve. Without the sleeve, yes. But like others above have mentioned, there are so many other variables involved.
I am in my mid 50's and a year and a half ago I lost 50 lbs on weight watchers in 4 months so I don't know if it's an age problem or if it's how bad you want it and stick with it.
