I can'tfind a protein shake I can get down. I am on my pre op diet if I can't handle now what will I ever do post op. Has anyone else struggled with the ahkes and what did you do? Should I not get sleeved if I can not take in the protein?
Mike-relax. Your tastes are going to change so don't worry about what you are going to like after the surgery. PLUS, there are many people who don't even drink protein after surgery. The folks in the UK don't ever drink protein shakes...they EAT regular food. But, you can try UNJURY. I love it. It is an online item but may be at GNC. Use fat free milk instead of water. Or, put it in your coffee. I mix about 1/4 cup of the Chocolate Splender with tap water THEN add my boiling water, diet hot chocolate and a teaspoon of coffee. If you try to mix it with boiling water first, it will clump up. They have two kinds of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and unflavored. Throw it is a blender with fresh or frozen fruit and make a smoothie. You just have to experiment. For goodness sakes, don't even think about "not getting sleeved" over the protein issue!!! You can private message me anytime for other ideas after your surgery. Good luck!
UNJURY Medical Quality Protein. Best Tasting Whey Protein Isolate Powder. Most Trusted Whey Protein Powder Supplement. High Quality Whey Protein
They have a "sampler" you can order. The product seems expensive but you get what you pay for. All that premixed, canned stuff makes me gag! And, its not that good quality.
It took me a week to find out what I could get down during pre-op. The only thing I can get down is the Body Fortress from Wal Mart (chocolate). I am 4 days post-op and I am drinking the grape isopure (40 grams of protein in 20 oz.) and I add NSA 100% grape juice to it. I can add back the Body Fortress next week. I tried the stuff from GNC, gagged and wanted to throw up every time. I was miserable. I also tried UNJURY unflavored. I only used that in my cream of chicken and couldn't taste it. Hope this helps.
Don;t give up Mike you'll be able to do this. Have you tried the UNJURY protein shakes? Go to the website off your search engine. They have a variety of flavors, including a killer protein cream of chicken soup...awesome! There are a variety of premade shakes out there you can get such as Oh Yeah, but for me they are too sweet, if you can believe that. I still have at least 1 shake a day that is premade, from Sam's Club that has 30 gr protein for 160 calories, it comes in vanilla and chocolate. I do the chocolate and haven't tried the vanilla. There's also the usual slimfast if you like that. You can go the route of making your own with whey protein powder which you can pick up pretty much anywhere. Go on the web and look up protein shake recipes. I think it's a trial and error thing for most people.
Greek yogurt which has the highest protein can be put into the mixes along with different types of soy milkes and the mixes, etc. There are tons of recipes to explore. Good luck and keep us posted...and again, no you don't want to cancel your surgery. It will be the very best things for the rest of your life.
I had the same problem. Everything I tried tasted too chemically for me. Blech. But I found that I really like the Atkins advantage pre-mixed shakes and the No Sugar added Carnation Instant breakfast. Both were recommended by my surgeon's office. Good luck!

for protien powder I like isopure, you can always eat egg whites for your protien if you like that plus, fish, chicken, meats, jerky.
As you can see from above, it's hit or miss. Most of us try about 10 proteins it seems before we find something. I detest unjury but love syntrax naturals medical unflavored. I miss it in my tea, coffee, smoothies, yogurt and I just don't taste it at all. However, I can't have it everyday, since surgery I've become whey intolerant to a point... so....
Another option is the proasis line of liquid proteins. They are a complete protein (I had it checked) and it's just 2.9 oz of liquid you can mix in water to get 25 gms of protein. If you want to try one before you buy a pkg of 6, and you have a Rite Aid pharmacy near you most of them carry the niagra grape flavor in singles. Way too expensive to buy it that way all the time but there are several good i-net sources that are much cheaper.

CFIDS =Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Also dx with post-bariatric reactive hypoglycemia; and chronic gastritis (both sleeve complications). Permanently disabled.
Start weight 335, down to 218, up during gastritis. Have accepted there is no way to lose it with my hypoglycemia. Current weight 260. Currently doing 10 day sleeve reset and determined to get back down to my post surgical weight or close to it.
What brands of protein shake have you tried? I have found Syntrax Nectar to be palitable. The have a lot of different flavors and you can buy a sampler pack from mybariatricpantry.com/ There are so many sources of protein out there--not just shakes.
I can't do protein powder shakes but love unjury chicken soup powder that I add to hot water - it is yummy and works for a protein drink. Otherwise pre and post op I stick to premixed shakes - they are good. I love Oh Yeah in all flavors (I order them on-line) and Lean Body from Wal-Mart.
As you can tell from all the other posts, there are a lot of different choices and tastes out there. If at first you don't succeed try try again! You can do it!
Check out the different sampler packs. I know Chike! protein offers a sampler pack on their website, and Syntrax offers a huge sampler (13 flavors for $13 last I checked). Celebrate Vitamins offers a free sampler pack of chewables and shakes. Don't be afraid to email all kinds of companies with a short note saying "I'm undergoing surgery and will be reliant on protein drinks, do you have any samples for a future lifetime customer?" Most companies that produce protein shakes are familiar with WLS and will be very accommodating.
Places like The Vitamin Shoppe and GNC will sometimes have free samples if you ask, and they stock single serve packets or pre-mixeds to try before you plunk down a lot of cash on a huge tub of questionable powder.
Also, as previous posters have said, most people's tastes change several times after surgery, so what you don't like now may be delicious on the other side.
If nothing else works, Torani sugar-free flavored syrups (like they use in coffee shops) can cover up many nasty protein shake tastes =)
Best of luck to you!
