Default Advice needed, nervouse about first party since sleeved

I have family Birthday party to attend tonight. I am 5 weeks out from my surgery, and I haven't seen these family members since well before my surgery. They can't wait to SEE me, feeling a little pressure. But I have no idea what they are serving, and being on puree foods, I will not be able to partake. i don't want anyone to make a fuss and I don't want to put my host out! I know I can eat before, but I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable... remember I am in the south, and you show love by cooking for people and watching them eat. Not a great tradition, but that is part of my southern culture or at least where I'm from. So has anyone had any situations like this and can offer any advice how to put people at ease and still have a good time? Just don't want it to be weird.

Absolutely take something you can eat and warm it up or mix it there. These people will be so supportive of you and your new way of life and will love seeing you stick to your plan. Call ahead and explain to the hostess that you will be doing this and see if you can get an idea of the menu.

Party was awesome, everyone supportive, no fuss was made, got to educate a lot of people who were interested and got more compliments that I an ever remember, that all was not expected, as usual I over analyzed the whole situation and so glad I went and learned a lesson!

I survived my first family get together, only 10 days after surgery. I had told nobody.
I got through it by saying I was dieting, and it WORKED.
I put small amounts of soft food on my plate, and picked at it. I actually ate a few bites of salmon (I was really worried about this, being only 10 days out I was still on full liquids and purees).
Anyway, I had no issues. It went so much better than I imagined.
    Day of surgery: 248 lbs
