hi everyone just wondering if u r ever able to drink alcohol ?
I am 10 months out and can drink anything I want. Alcohol affects you alot faster than it used to, but as long as you pay attention to how much you consume... there's no reason that you can't enjoy a little.. in moderation... unless you like being that guy/girl that is passed out in the bushes at 8pm. lol
I agree with my friend, Joanne. I never felt alcohol was a problem with me prior to surgery, so why would it be post-surgery. Although, I might actually drink less now, I never drank much before. I enjoy a dirty martini now and then, and am also a cheap drunk now Come to think of it, I was always a "cheap drunk"...lol...
I am only 3 months out and have drank on two occasions.... the first about 6 weeks out. I just took it slow. You should be ok as long as you don't over-do it. My docs wanted us to NEVER drink alcohol again, but I did some research and saw other drs recommended waiting 30 days. The only thing I would advise you of is the fact that there has been a significant link to WLS and alcoholism. A lot of us tend to be emotional eaters with addictive personalities (hence our food addictions) so when one crutch is taken away, some replace it with another. Just be aware of that.
I am 9 1/2 months out, and I have had an occasional drink for the last 3 months or so. My doctor never said anything against drinking after the 6 month mark. Like the other ladies, I am now a very cheap drunk. I make sure it is done in moderation. I can have a mixed drink or a cranberry & vodka, and I am pretty tipsy. I was never a big drinker before my surgery either, so I don't really have any concerns about trading a food vice for a alcohol vice. My doctor did say something like 7% of wls patients become alcoholics after surgery. So I would say be aware of that, and be aware of the empty liquid calories you are taking in. Drinking also can lower your ability to realize how much food you are consuming, and cause you to overeat. I personally have not have any negative reaction to drinking though.
Replacing one addition for another is so true. Right now wine every day for me goes down so nice. I drink about 12 oz. my weight slowed alot since I started drinking alcohol. Prior to surgery maybe had one glass of wine when playing cards at my parents house. To tell the truth--I gotta get this under control soon. Just venting. If you don't drink much now please don't start till you are way into your weight loss. Yes I have lost 55# so far, but I think I would be to goal if wine didn't have such pull. Been thinking a longtime at starting a thread like this. Just my opinion. Too early to say I'm dependant on alcohol yet, but I can see it coming. Please people weigh in on this.
Hey, donewithdieting, have you been gaining weight since you started Drinking? maybe if you hold off till you drop those pesky 19 lbs you can not worry about the slower loss. Also, for a while before met my fella I drank every night bc i was lonely and bored(?). would go on a call out for work at 2am and they would just pick me up at the bar. went to work drunk bc i could handle my alcohol like a pro ... etc.. i finally set rules for myself and started to be a bit** about it. I would make fun of people (in my head) who drank alone at home, so that I wouldn't do this myself. Or if were going to the bar (because thats the only place I was comfortable after moving to a new area) i wouldn't buy a drink other than my first unless i was playing pool. To me, even though I seriously enjoy the head change that drinking, eating, smoking, etc bring about, it has always been more about relieving the tedium. I am a wild child. I crave adventure and adrenaline. once i met my fella i quit drinking but let me say that life is REALLY boring with him. we are so different. so i have gained a lot of weight in addition to the previous poundage, that i just cant get rid of on my own. i really want to get this balance right so that I can have my adventure/ fun but still keep the man who loves me. i know that before we met I was still drinking just not as bad as when i set these rules, but finding something that was greater than my need for action has really helped me gain control of a life i never saw in the spiral! IMO it might be best if you were to find an active hobby. i cant wait to have the time to actually do things I enjoy while out for surgery!
My information pack says preferably 3 months before alcohol. I think that's to give your tummy some serious healing time. It does say in moderation.
being a cheap date sounds brilliant! I do like the occasional drink but I hate spending the money! In my youth I used to do the stupid drinking, thought I was cleaver. Now in my 40s I plan on having a drink & then forget lol make a cup of tea instead (sad but true)
I don't go out clubbing much because it costs sooo bloody much! Maybe once I am healed I will go out again as it won't cost me as much yay!
I've tried to drink a couple of times and it burns my stomach. The last time, it gave me diarrhea for 3 days. So no, I'm not drinking.
