    Default quandry

I am having trouble deciding between the Gastric Bypass and the Gastric Sleeve. Did anyone else have trouble figuring this out and what were your reasons for choosing the Gastric Sleeve?

Never considered bypass. Sleeve is less invasive, safer, less side effects, equally effective, quicker recovery time, less chance of regaining.... No choice in my opinion.

I was going to get a bypass. I had my mind made up and went to my first doctor's appt only to find out I was not a candidate for it. (prior medical condition) I cried. He told me I was able to have the sleeve, which I had never heard of and so I agreed. I came home and started researching the sleeve and found it has fewer side effects. No dumping, no malabsorption issues, no rerouting of my intestines, not so invasive. I found this board and began to read all the comments and stories and was sold. I am so thankful that I was not able to have the bypass. The sleeve takes out the fundus of the stomach which makes the hunger hormone gherlin and the bypass does not. My main problem was that I was hungry day and night and ate to try to satiate that hunger. I am thrilled when I do feel the need to eat now that I eat a tiny bit and am stuffed. I have not felt stuffed in 20 yrs. I also am happy that I will be able to have a bite or two of cake or a cookie on down the road and not have to know where the nearest bathroom is in case 'dumping' should take place. I really feel in controll of my eating and have the energy to exercise (this is a miracle in and of itself). I love my sleeve.

After researching all the WLS the only 2 which I would consider are the DS and the Sleeve. Not the bypass since they leave your unused stomach in your body, you can't take certain meds ever again and the malabsorbtions of calories stops after 2 years but the malabsorbtion of nutrients never stops. The sleeve was actually the first step of a staged DS procedure on people who were at high risk to have the whole surgery done at once. What they found out was a lot of people never came back for the second half of the surgery, and the sleeve was enought to lose all the weight. The DS is the sleeve + the rerouting of intestines for malabsorbtion. If you are against having your intestines rerouted, then I would suggest the sleeve, also the sleeve can always be converted to the DS later if you find the weight loss not great enough to get you to a healthy weight.

Make sure you read everything you can about BOTH procedures. Sometimes complications dictate making a choice you did not originally plan for. Read up on the difference in absorption, nutrient deficiencies, and dietary restrictions and make the choice that is right for you. ...then prepare for all possible outcomes.

I chose the sleeve. The sleeve and I did not agree. I am the 0.001%. Most sleevers will tell you that they are perfectly happy with their outcomes.

    Best of luck to you.

I started out wanting the lap-band...until i kept reading about problem after problem that people were having with it. Someone on the band forum converted over to the sleeve and was having great success with it. So, I started doing my research on the sleeve. I read what ever I could find. Everyone seemed to have fantastic results with it, but there were however a few who had problems with the sleeve as well. So I kept researching and found this forum. The success rate verses the unfortunate ones that had problems were so few compared to the band, that I made my decision. I found a Dr. and went to his informational seminar and confirmed my choice. Out of all of the available surgeries, this seemed to be the least invasive and still has an excellent success rate. I know, cutting out your stomach is a big deal, but the complication rate is really very, very low. I never even considered any other surgeries.

Good luck with your decision and just read, read, read.

I too debated which to do, I researched and researched and decided that because gastric sleeve is less complicated, with generally less chance for complications, (like malabsorption issues), that VGS would be the better choice for me.. If for some rare reason I do not loose the weight, (which I will), then Bipass may be an option later. VSG is by far the safer route to go! I am scheduled to have mine on August 28th! Very excited!! Peace and God Bless as you decide which is a better choice for you!!
