Default Re: dumping syndrome with the sleeve?

There are two kinds of patient dumping: early and late. Both occur after a meal, especially after eating foods high in fat, refined carbohydrates or sugar (table sugar or natural sugar like that found in fruit)…
•Early Dumping Syndrome occurs within 30 minutes of eating a meal. In addition to eating foods high in fat, carbohydrates or sugar, it can also be brought on by eating foods that are too cold or too hot or by drinking liquids during your meal. Early symptoms include…
    ◦Bloating
    ◦Diarrhea
    ◦Dizziness
    ◦Heart palpitations
    ◦Nausea
    ◦ Rapid heart rate
    ◦ Sweating
    ◦Vomiting
•Late Dumping Syndrome is a form of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). When you ingest too much sugar, your now smaller stomach does not digest it properly so your intestines absorb and deposit too much of it into your blood stream. Your body compensates by releasing more insulin which makes your blood sugar drop. Late symptoms include…
    ◦Anxiety
    ◦Diarrhea
    ◦Dizziness
    ◦Fainting
    ◦Fatigue
    ◦ Heart palpitations
◦Mental changes such as problems concentrating or feeling confused
    ◦Rapid heart rate
◦Strong feelings of hunger (because your body craves more sugar to balance the increase of insulin in your system)
    ◦Sweating
    ◦Weakness

Interestingly, some patients' tolerance for the items which have caused dumping syndrome in the past can change with time. For example, some patients who cannot tolerate sugar immediately after surgery may be able to handle it in small amounts several years out.

I'm eating very little sugar, but I read it can happen when the food passes to quickly into the intestines without being digested. I have gotten very hot, diareahea and seems more comes out then goes in.

I had it happen once and it wasn't anything sugary that I ate. I know it's rare with the Sleeve but I was dizzy, sweaty and feeling like crap.

I've never had dumping, but I get so sick to my stomach and have to run throw up if I eat fat or too much sugar. If I take one bite too much...I better just hang over the toilet...my mouth starts to water like crazy and I will lose that last bite...not everything...just the last bite! Then I'm angry with myself for eating stuff I'm not suppose to! Sigh...wish I had more disapline!

It is rare, but I pushed my sleeve too early by eating a bit of McDonalds ice cream. I got dumping syndrome... felt suddenly weak, nauseous, sweaty and had to go lie down. I didn't vomit, but it was close. A little later I got diarrhea. Of course these are all classic signs of dumping. I'm sure it was because I had eaten something that was too high in everything (sugar, lactose, fat) too soon after surgery. I am not normally lactose intolerant but I was sensitive to lactose for awhile after surgery.

I can eat the McD ice cream fine now and it is an occasional treat for me when I have the calories to spare within my daily goal. For ice cream, the calorie content in a McD's cone is not bad at all (170 cal). The carbs are really high though, which is why I keep it a very rare treat.

I have had a bad reaction to food - no sweating and dizziness, but really bad cramps and diarrea within about 30 minutes of consuming the food. First time it happened, it was after drinking the Premier Protein which I have been drinking for months. My body just decided - I don't like this anymore. Nutritionalist said to try again after a few months off.

Second time it was after having about 3-4 ounces of full sugar straweberry ice cream. I felt horrid, but again no sweating or dizziness.

Might be lactose intolerance, but i am fine with cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt - so just not sure.

Dumping syndrome sucks! It is not as common with the sleeve as it is with by-pass but it can and does happen at times. If you are one of the lucky few who seem to be troubled with this, you just have to be MORE diligent to following the "Rules"! And you learn quickly the things that cause it and avoid them. Unless you are very STUPID like me and say "ooooh i really want a little taste of ice cream! Maybe it wont bother me THIS time?!" Most things that cause it for me i avoid like the plauge...but ice cream gets me every time! DAMN your sweet creamy deliciousness!!

I live with this problem everyday...I have no dicipline...if my stomach could hold it, I would stuff it full...which is why this surgery was the only thing that worked for me. No matter what I measured out, I would be back for seconds or thirds! I suffer with a lot of gas because I eat things I know I shouldn't...getting sick is the only thing that stops me so I'm glad it happens. I've not suffered dumping but if getting nauseated is part of it, I get plenty of that! I can take or leave ice cream, but chips or cookies....can't trust myself! :-( I'm scared I have stretched my stomach some from being a bad girl!

I have not experienced dumping syndrome (yet) since being sleeved. Since I do not have my gall bladder and I did experience DS before being sleeved: usually as a reaction to ice cream or rich foods. I am also not lactose intolerate--cheeses, yogurt are not a problem. Not sure what it is about ice cream--besides being incredibly rich and laden with cream Dumping is the most awlful feeling--I would have to lie down afterwards because I felt like my body was in shock.

Sugar (ice cream), fat, and milk are triggers for the above early symptoms. The thing I miss most is a big ice cold glass of milk. Just can't do it anymore...

Nausea, cold sweat, heart racing. Passes fairly quickly. I've had this a few times until I figured out what was causing it.

I have experienced both the Early symptoms, (Mostly from that DAMN Ice cream)and the Late ones from when i needed to gain weight and ate too much candy and got the blood-sugar off! I would feel so horrible and sweaty and dizzy my heart would race and sometimes you just feel like your gonna die. All you can do is lie down and wait for it to go away. Drinking water helps a little.

I've also had this experience and it is one I am trying to avoid at all costs. Some foods sit like a brick or make me a little nauseous but I think this is my stomach not being ready for them. However, last week I made veges one night but then had half a hot dog from my daughters plate. It wasn't the turkey kind either. For an hour I sat on my bed with bad cold sweats and extreme nausea. After the hour I felt better but I don't think I will ever eat another hot dog again!

I have had dumping syndrome several times since surgery. Sometimes for no apparent reason! Sometimes I will eat something (like a jalapeno popper from sonic) and think, I bet this will be a mistake later and then nothing happens. Then other days, I make all the smart food choices and get sick. I think some people are just more sensitive than others and I have always had a really sensitive stomach, even before surgery, and nothing has changed in that regard, except I throw up some now and didn't before. I don't like throwing up but it has taught me NOT to have that last little bite of my already little bitty meal!
