The kiddos are in bed and my hubby and I are enjoying a drink. We drink socially. Will I be able to share a drink with him after surgery? How long after surgery? Or will I always be designated driver going forward?
Funny you should ask.....
You can drink within a few months check with your doctor for his recommendation, but beware....Most sleevers find alcohol has a magnified effect post surgery including THIS guy....You also need to be careful as there is a high incidence of alcoholism among bariatric patients as they substitute one addiction for another.
Last week, after not drinking more than maybe once a year, I went drinking 3 of 4 nights....I had way too much and of course did regretful things Nothing illegal mind you, but bad decisions can come with too much drinking, and after the sleeve many, not all, get drunker much faster and on much less alcohol.

Highest weight: 450+ lbs
Weight before beginning diet 90 days before surgery: 410 lbs.
Huh.. I haven't come across that statistic yet ( do waaaay to much research), kinda scary though. I think the husband will keep me in check with the drinking. When I do drink it's only with family so I'm not too worried about the bad decision part. I really don't want to replace one bad addiction with the other though. Thank you for replying. More to consider after surgery. Will definitely add this to the what my family needs to watch for list. We are all so close and look out for each other. They would kick my butt if they saw me heading in that direction.
I was told NO drinking for a year. But I had a sip of Moscoto that my friend was drinking. It was the worse experience of my life. I was a social drinker the majority of my life. After my experience , I will never have a drink again. It was like lighting my sleeve up with a lighter. BURNED so bad I cried.
I have hardly had a drink since my sleeve--intend to really not drink at all until one year post-op. However, I have tried drinking 3 times and have found that a blended margarita or pina colada goes down more easily than either one of those drinks on the rocks, which burn my stomach and make me feel sick. It's best to just stay away because it's just empty calories and carbs.
I am almost 8 months out and I drink occasionally. Just like foods, certain things will work and others won't. I have found wine to be a nice treat that doesn't bother my tummy. I cannot tolerate anything mixed with fruit juice. But as others have warned, be mindful. It hits you faster, and is very high in calories. But I choose to still enjoy from time to time now that I am close to goal weight.
I've had one drink since surgery. I have a margarittavile blender, I took one Bacardi breezer, mixed that up and the one drink turned into 4 drinks. So I felt I could be social with others, controlled the calories by stretching one drink into 4, introduced the liquor slowly to my system so it didn't knock me on my butt, and they were damn tasty lol.
I'm taking it with me when we go to Vancouver island next week. I plan on making sleeve smart bellinis
iv drank quite abit since surgery think my first ones were 4/5 weeks out at first it did hit me quicker but now i can drink just like i did before surgery,i guess its ur own choie toi drink or not seen as its empty calories n all that but being so young i also dont wanna give up my social life and fun life with my friends and fiance
Story linking bariatric surgery and alcoholism.
In our psych class we were cautioned that those who tend towards addictive personalities, ie if you have had sugar/carb addictions prior to surgery or if you smoke (another type of addiction), there is a 25% chance you will end up an alcoholic if you drink much at all. It activates the part of the brain that goes to sleep after surgery, addiction wise, and can cause all kinds of trouble.
We're all adults, and will do as we please, but at least be well armed with info.

Best NSV - fitting on a kid's amusement park ride with my 4 yr old grandson!
CFIDS =Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Also dx with post-bariatric reactive hypoglycemia; and chronic gastritis (both sleeve complications). Permanently disabled.
Start weight 335, down to 218, up during gastritis. Have accepted there is no way to lose it with my hypoglycemia. Current weight 260. Currently doing 10 day sleeve reset and determined to get back down to my post surgical weight or close to it.
I went to the America's cup race in Newport Rhode Island a few weeks ago with a buddy. We have been waiting for a long time for this and I did have a few beers every night. Even a Tom Collins one night. They do hit you quick, I was a real cheap date. But I don't encourage this as it was my own choice, but those Heinekens were really good and I had no trouble.
