Lightbulb Odd Question - but obvious

    Hi All,

My husband is a gem, rare I tell ya. He asked me a question I hadn't considered asking on here.

For those of you who have had the surgery, what did your family or friends do both before and after recovery that really made a huge difference?

He asked me for a list of things he and the kids could do to help support me during recovery and after.

I thought to myself,...god love ya! He is just the type who needs specifics and lists

    Thanks in advance for sharing!

My husband let me rest when needed and I didn't cook, clean, or do laundry for a week.

He sounds like a keeper. Let him do for you and just pamper you, you will be tired and need help.

It's just my husband and I in the house. While I was on the pre op liquid diet he ate in a room away from me and did any cooking while I was out of the house so the smell wouldn't make me crazy. Now that I have had surgery it doesn't bother me when he eats in front of me. He does remind me to drink my water which is very helpful.

Your husband IS thinking of your journey. The first week or so is important after surgery and the allowance of 'rest' should be a given.
More importantly, changing the entire households eating habits for the duration of life along with exercise. Your portions will be smaller, he could still eat as much as he'd like. Just make sure it's more of a health conscience meals. It's okay to splurg a bit now and again. But TRUE support is changing along with you.

My husband took care of the cooking, cleaning, etc. My sons who are in their 20 's, helped me get up out of the chair or sofa, got me drinks, and get this...We have a couch with 2 recliners. At night I slept on one and of the boys slept on the other" just in case you need something mom"! I couldn't love them all more. 4 months later and they still keep after me...did you drink your water? And the youngest, 17, walks with me 3-4 eves a week! I hope you are as fortunate as I have been! Good luck on your journey.

What a keeper! It helps to be reminded to drink. Also, just checking in without waking you up is a blessing after being woke up nearly every hour in the hospital. What else? Fending off visitors and phone calls you don't feel like taking is helpful. Going on walks is nice unless he's like mine, who will run off to talk to the neighbors. Lol. Best of luck! Count your blessings!

I was sent home with 2 oz. cups and told to drink 5 an hour, no matter what. My sweet hubby made sure they were always filled with Isopure and juice. He would remind me to get up and walk and he would walk with me. He took care of the little guy (3 year old grandson whom we adopted) and made sure he understood he could no longer bounce all over me He would get me my pain medicine when I needed it. He cooked or got take out for the rest of the family. My near grown sons cooked too. Most of all, at the top of the list, put reassurance. I needed that from time to time. I needed to know that I did this for a reason and that the pain will go away eventually. You will do great with that kind of support at home

My husband drank protein shakes with me starting 2 weeks pre-op, and never left my side for 2 days in the hospital. He refused to answer questions from nosy neighbors/people we know from civic organization, His stock reply, "If you knew Jennifer better, you'd know she is an intensely private person and does not want her body/surgery being discussed".

My hubby made sure I came home to a clean house, and didn't have to worry about cooking or cleaning unless I just wanted to get up and do something. He also reminded me to walk, sip water, and to take some pain medication if I needed it instead of trying to tough it out. But where he really shined was in the hospital when he walked with me all through the night, and went out of his way to insure I was comfortable. I hope that one day, when he needs me like that I can return the favor to him.
