Has anybody had problems taking a poop after the surgery and if so did you take a laxative
I was prescribed some medicine to 'keep things moving' for the first 10 days to be taken before 'meals' and colace, a stool softener. Haven't gone yet, but hopefully a stool softener will help. Maybe try colace or dulcolax? I know with laxatives it could be dangerous b/c you already run the risk of being dehydrated as it is, and laxatives will mess up your electrolyte balance. I would try a stool softener or see what someone else says on here. Good luck.
I'm doing okay right now.. Going at least once or twice a day. I've always been very 'regular'! LOL! So far, so good, *knock on wood*, but I've heard alot of people have troubles!
My surgeon told me if I hadn't gone within 3 days of the surgery to take milk of magnesia up until recently I had to take something at least once a week to be able to go.
I was using Dulcolax, but my PA told me yesterday not to use it because it contains a stimulant and your bowels can become dependent on it... she recommended Miralax instead. Also said that I could now start using Metamucil or Benefiber (was not recommended during 1st six weeks though) if needed but mostly to drink water, water and more water to keep things moving.
My doc's nurse told me several options I could try: Magnesium, it acts as an osmotic diuretic (pulls water into intestines), prune juice ( I chose baby pureed prunes so I can heat it up), and Miralax. I started on the baby prunes, added fiber powder (the one with no sugar and unflavored), made sure I get enough fat, although not too much, drink plenty of water and walk, walk, walk. It has helped some. Have not tried magnesium or the Miralax because I do not want my intestines to become dependant on them (nurse assured this was okay). Unfortunately, I had constipation prior to surgery because of the antidepressant I take. I hope this helps.
Milk of magnesia worked for me, you jut have to figure out what dose works for you, too much give me the runs! So I took 1/2 the recommended.

What has helped me is I take the Benefiber chewable tablet in the morning and two fiber gummies at night. My nutritionist told me that if your not getting enough of the essential oils that can really make you constipated. Along with the fiber, she recommended high fiber oatmeal and mixing it with 1 tablespoon of "Smart Balance" butter. It took about 36 hours to get in my system, but it works like a charm. Any time I feel constipated or its tough to go but not constipated I try this and it has worked every time for me. My best friend who had surgery a week before you drinks a glass of prune juice with this and that works for her.
I hope this helps! :0
I have had serious issues in this department. I now take duphalac daily because a build up at this end can have an effect on my persistent reflux further up the line. I still go very rarely. I like the prune juice idea and will give that a try. A natural approach is better. The problem is that the meds I take can have the side effect of constipation as well-such fun!
