Undecided???

I have been on my liquid diet for 2 days and surgery is scheduled for Friday morning. We found out my mother has breast cancer and will be having a double mastectomy the end of next week. My husband thinks I should reschedule so I can take care of my mom and be here for her. I on the other hand think I should get this behind me so I can be on my way to recovery. Any thoughts? Will I feel up to taking care of her and my dad a week after surgery?

Hi Cherrie,
I had my surgery on Feb 8th, and I am 5 days post op. Other than a few minor aches, I am able to move around and do light cleaning. If you are just cooking and cleaning, then you should be fine, but if you have to do any lifting (more than 15lbs), I wouldn't.

I run a daycare and had my surgery on Monday the 12th of Dec came home the 14th of Dec which was a Wednesday night I took Thurs and Friday off to spend it with my daughter and went right back to work on Monday keep my daughter who is 3 plus 3 other little girls that are 2&3 years old and then 22 month old twin boys and another 1 year old and did just fine. I was tired by the end of the day but the exercise keep me on track as I didn't have time to sit around and do nothing. I think you will be fine. I flew home 3 weeks after and took care of my mom after she had surgery as well.

Wow, so sorry about your mom. I am a breast cancer survivor and also had double mastectomies. It was a rough time and I needed lots of help. Still, I think you shoukd go ahead and get your sleeve. Obesity is a cause of breast cancer, and now you know it's in the family, you need to take care of you too. Hufgs, prayers and best of luck!

That is tough. Does your mom know you are having surgery? I know you want to help her but you also need to help yourself so you will live longer to be with your family. I have had a good recovery and am post op 10 days. First 3 days are hardest and hopefully you heal well. If you reschedule the surgery will you really do it? I would be afraid of putting it off. The decision is yours only and you know all the ins and outs. I would do it if it was me. Again that is just me good luck!

So very sorry to hear about your mom. HUGZZ to you both. Is your mom going to have to go through and chemo and/or radiation?
I had Stage 3 Level 3 breast cancer...had left breast removed and 6 weeks later started chemo....this was 4 years ago.
My thought is that you should go ahead and get sleeved. Recovery is quick and you will be strong enough (I think) to help her out. I needed more help during the chemo, then I needed right after surgery.

Prayers for your mom! I'm going through the same thing right now. My double mastectomy is Feb 27 with reconstruction. Is your mom doing reconstruction? Chemo or radiation? From what they told me, with a mastectomy you are in the hospital 1-2 days, and with reconstruction 4-7 days.

I would say, depending on whether or not you've ever had surgery before, you should kind of have an idea on how you do after surgery. Then weigh in the factors if she's doing reconstruction, as she would be in the hospital longer, giving you a few more days to recover. Also, is there anyone else that would be able to help your mom out as well, or will it be entirely on you?

In the end, I would talk to your mom, tell her your feelings, and I'm sure she'll tell you to go ahead and have your surgery.
