How old is too old to have the gastric sleeve. I'm 60 years old & afraid that excess skin following weight loss could be a disaster? Does it help to do strength training during weight loss to limit the amount of excess skin?

Hi
I am 56 and having the sleeve on 14th March, re your question I can only say that when I was age 34 I lost 8 stone on a calorie controlled diet and 12 months later had a tummy tuck as the skin was awfully saggy and nothing would shift it or firm it up. I have over the years put it all back on hence the sleeve op. I expect my skin to be even worse 22 years on. Hope this helps
Sue
Muscle toning will only help the muscles underneath, not the skin. I am 47 but have been overweight for 15 years. I'm pretty sure I will have excess skin. I have already looked into surgery for it, but will wait and give my skin some time after the weight is all off. Otherwise, what has been suggested to help (though minimally) is:
hot baths with epsom salt
vit e lotion
skin brushing
lots of fluids
Hello, I am 56 and have lost 70 lbs since beginning this journey. I need to lose 55 more. I have the loose skin already, but it is pretty easy to hide with clothing. However, I don't have the high blood pressure, diabetes, joint pain, or the cpap (sleep apnea), anymore. I jiggle when I wiggle, but at least I feel like wiggling now! Excellent trade off, I think. I thought I was too old for the surgery too, but now I feel decades younger!
Thanks for responding, all of you "mature," thinner ladies! Here I am worried about excess skin hen I should be reveling in the benefits of being able to wear cuter clothes & being healthy! I will stop whining immediately!
I am also older. Im 55 and im sure im gonna have some extra skin sagging and i concerned about this and worried about more wrinkles but i think its gonna be worth it to feel better and even with wrinkles and saggy skin I'm gonna look better than i do now. I have also thought am I too old? But ur only as old as u feel right?
As you've probably read from the other posts, the positive effects--no sleep apnea, lower blood pressure, healthy knees--outweigh the excess skin issue. I'm fretting about the small stuff. I need to look at the big picture. I think I'm just having pre-surgery jittters!
Thanks for bringing me back to earth & the real problems!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saggy skin can be fixed as you know. My friend lost 119 lbs. and said she doesn't like the way she looks when she's naked. I told her that the thing that really matters is her health and that she looks good with her clothes on. Your selection of clothes is wonderful at a smaller size! You can always get a tummy tuck later. LOL
so good to see this discussed, this is also one of my fears (excess skin) but then again I wonder if I am attempting to sabotage myself. My fat already has sagging but its fat that sags, for women only, there must be 5 lbs of extra skin and fat on top of my vaginal area already. This skin began to hang down about 8 years ago but if man can make a spanx that will fit, I will be fine. What do I care what hangs if bp goes down; cholesterol goes down; weight comes off, I can walk again without hips hurting and can add even a few months to my life then let it all hang out., I don't care. This is not about making me thin, this is about saving my life and even if I look older, I will just keep walking until I get comments like you Look good for your age. HEHE. See dr. Tues. and see where we go from here...still have apnea, and upper GI to do but feel so good. have been really watching weight for last three weeks no and can feel the difference. I have thrown my rope onto a star and am riding it as far as I can. Best of luck to all of us HANG LOOSE
To Minnie and Gottadoit, and all those who don't worry about sagging tummy skin, God bless you! I am 54 years old, and am truly not worried about a little sagging tummy. I've said it before in other threads, but Spanx is my friend! Even bathing suits come with "power net tummy control" these days. Of course, I am married to a man who loved me when I was at my fattest, and even with all my wrinkles, cellulite, and stretch marks. For those who are younger and/or single, I totally understand the desire for a tummy tuck. All I really want is a neck lift and an eyelid lift, LOL!
MorefitDiane & Gonnadoit, THANKS! My surgery is set for March 10 & I don't know why i'm obsessing suddenty about saggy skin. You are soooooo right...it's about being healthy again! Please keep the encouraging words coming!
MorefitDiane....Several months ago, I decided to heck with the weight, just give me a neck & eyelid lift. So, I had a consultation with a plastic surgeon. Then I changed my mind & decided to go for the sleeve! When did you have the sleeve & what has been your progress?
Hi CBel, today is my two month sleeve-iversary! I have lost 43 lbs. so far, although 12 of that was on the pre-surgery diet. So about 3 1/2 lbs. per week average since the surgery. It was about 4 lbs a week up until about a week or so ago, but this week has been slow. I'm so happy I did this step! And yes, the neck and eye lift can come later...
