Default Question Is it true there is no dumping?

I am on the journey to getting the sleeve. In researching on two different sites, one said you dump and the other said you do not. These were under the title pros and cons GB vs GS.

Then I read a blog that said there is. Any input would be great. I don't plan on getting the sleeve and testing like eating sweets because what would be the sense in going through it. But would like to know. For those of you who are further along, in pros and cons it said under Gastric Sleeve you could have a more regular lifestyle is this true?

I appeaciate your input as you are there and I have till March before my surgery. Have 6 weeks of classes and then go back for a weigh in and then get my surgery date. Thru 3 classes.

    God's Blessings

I am in the process of getting all of my testing done for the sleeve. Hopefully I will have the surgery in the beginning of the new year. I asked my dr that specific question about dumping and he said there was no dumping with the sleeve. Because you do still kinda have a stomach as compared to the bypass which bypasses the majority of the stomach.

I never had any dumping with the sleeve, in fact, I've never had reflux, heartburn or vomiting either! The first two weeks was an adjustment period with intestinal situations but beyond that, it has been smooth sailing for me and no ugly side effects!

I have read on here that people do experience mild dumping as well as other sites. nothing like GB though. digestive enzymes like papaya and other enzymes would help if you are unlucky enough to experience it. I wouldnt say no one dumps. I would say its rare like most complications with the sleeve are rare too. this is based on research

I have never had dumping, my husband (he had bypass) did and still does nine years later but not real often. The worst I have had is sliming. When I ate something that didn't agree with me or over ate, I would start with pain (not bad but enough to get my attention) and that was followed by heavy saliva that would get very thick and uncomfortable. The whole process only lasted 10-20 minutes and I was glad it happened (not while it was happening) because it is a good reminder to be a good girl.

I do have BAD reflux but in defense of the surgery I have always had it and have been treated for it for at least the past 15 years. I do make poor choices sometimes now and I DO PAY with nightime reminders of reflux even through my meds, it is MY fault, some things should not be eaten especially before bed. At age 52 I guess I am just a slow learner!!

It is possible to experience some dumping symptoms, without the actual throwing up. If you get too full for instance you can start to feel lightheaded or dizzy, sweat like before you throw up, hot than cold , just feel sick like you want to throw up but can't. Basically it will pass as the food digests usually takes about 20-30 min. I experienced it once and wasn't sure what it was and that is what someone, who has had the sleeve, told me it was. Still called dumping type syndrome without the actual dump that comes out. Not too fun and when it happens to you it is definitely enough to not want it too happen again.

Dumping refers to the stomach "dumping" directly into the large intestine. My doc said it's the most mis-used term. Sleevers still have their small intestine, so they don't "dump". Gastric by-pass patients dump because their small intestine isn't helping to process their food. When they eat to much sugar or fat, the large intestine freaks out and they feel really sick...sweats, dizziness, diarrhea, and vomiting.

I have overeaten to the point where I felt nauseated and gotten some similar effects as dumping syndrome. It's not true dumping and usually passes in 15 minutes. My sister-in-law has a gastric by-pass, and she gets violently ill for up to an hour after eating overly sugary or fatty foods. I'm glad that isn't a sleeve issue.

Hey congratulations on making your decision to have the surgery! I am 29 days post op (sleeve) and its been exciting going through the process. Regarding the question of Dumping, I did a lot of the same research with the same results (50/50) My surgeon assured me that its not physically possible to "Dump" following a Sleeve operation, however about 3-4 days post-op I had an "episode" that was similar to every description of "Dumping Syndrome" I've come across. It wasn't one I have any anticipation of repeating (and knock on wood, have not.) it has all been very well worth it, I've experienced a lot of the challenging negatives (e.g. insomnia, weakness, "bathroom issues" etc..) But they've all been relatively mild, and without doubt a small pittance to pay for pros/results. I've lost an exponential amount of weight and appetite in a short time.
It's been a great decision and I wish you luck on your journey. Any questions you have feel free to ask, and if I can help I will.
    Best wishes!

I have never expereinced "dumping" but have had the "foamies". Foamies basically occur when you eat too much and your stomach gets too full. You burp up the gastric juices. It usually last me half an hour or until I throw up, whichever is sooner. Then the pressure is relieved and I go back to just feeling full. I have never expereinced any sweating, chills, diarrehea, etc. as you get from "dumping." Also, sugary foods dont bother me as they do with dumping.

My doctor told me that dumping meant if you eat something too fast or if you don't chew your food to the point of it being mushy, it comes back up. But not like vommitting. More like spitting up like a baby. This happened to me twice. Once when I waited too long inbetween eating and I ate fast, and then another time when I didn't chew enough.

Believe me, I'll never do it again. I don't like dumping.
