Chronic gastritis, virus or nickel allergy/staples

Rate this Entry
Hello folks,
Checking in.
Weight is stable but for now that's ok. I hurt too much to care about losing weight, just fine with not gaining.
I've been having stomach pain since last Aug, common thought was that it was my gallbladder, which stopped functioning.
Had my gallbladder out earlier this year and the pain didn't stop so I had an EGD and I have chronic gastritis. Yep, my poor sleeve is all inflamed.
Docs have thrown every test out there at it and can't find a cause. My bile reflux is fine, I don't have h pylori, etc, etc.

Current thought process is that it's either
1. Enterovirus, which folks like me with CFS are prone to after an injury (in this case surgery)...
or
2. Staple allergy. This is the lesser likely one but having done homework by calling the company that made the staples used on me I found out that titanium staples are routinely 10-14% nickel! I was pretty pissed to find that out. When they tell you titanium, you think pure titanium. Not so much.

So, Melisa testing coming up for titanium and nickel.
If it is not that, it's a virus and all I can do is treat it with my naturopath's help and wait.
If it is a nickel allergy I'll have to meet with a surgeon to see my options because the staples would have to go. Oy...

Until then it's live with it.
The hardest part is I just can't get protein down easily, it hurts, a lot.
So I'm doing smoothies twice a day and the rest is mushy food as if I were just sleeved because it's pretty ouchie in there. Pic of gastritis attached.

Hope all are well. Wanted those with known nickel allergies to know about the staples. Please understand it's not common but this is where folks come to find out all about the possible issues so it seems a good place to throw it out there.
I'm still hopeful that when this clears up eventually I'll be able to drop more weight. Right now my body is busy just trying to heal so I'm not going to subject it to an 800 calorie diet. I'm eating 1200 cal a day, gluten and dairy free and taking a handful of herbs and probiotics several times a day.
Otherwise, life is pretty peaceful and house is on the market to hopefully sell and move closer to my kids, the pool and my docs.
Miss you all but sometimes it's just hard to be here.
hugs

Could it be the herbs and probiotics you are throwing into your poor sleeve everyday? Do you know exactly what is in those herbs? Just because a naturopath says they are good for you doesn't mean they are. Just a thought.

Nope, they are the first thing to help, just started them a month ago and I've had this nearly a year. The herbs are slippery elm and marshmallow root. Both benign as far as irritation and in fact they are mucilaginous, meaning they coat well. Without them I can't function and forget sleep. The probiotics are megafoods megaflora, a very good product. If I could eat yogurt I would not need them but I can't....

My staples are titanium.. I don't know enough about nickel/titanium. What did they use with your surgery? I've not heard of using nickel with major surgeries as this and I didn't realize there's an allergy with titanium? I thought that's why they used it (along with NOT setting off metal detectors!).

@CidCHerise I think she is saying that the titanium staples are not ALL titanium, that they contain 10% - 14% nickel with 90% - 86% titanium. Kinda like 14k gold, we call it gold but it actually is only 58.5% gold with a number of other metals in it.

I hope that you have a virus and not the metal allergy. Prayers for you!

Correct. My staples are "titanium" but apparently almost all metals need some sort of alloy mix. It truly never occurred to me that there was nickel in them and I researched the sleeve procedure nearly to death, as most of us do. It only came up because I googled stomach staples allergy. Then I dug out my slip with the kind of staples they used on me and found the manufacturer. They says all titanium surgical staples are 10-14% nickel. As for metal detectors, nickel is not ferrous just like pure titanium, meaning it does not attract magnets or set off machines.
Mine were Covidien Endo Gia staples.
When I get results back I'll post.

    Hi sleeve folks!
Wanted to be honest and come back and say I had nickel testing and I am only slightly allergic to it (at least according to a patch test), therefore it's not the staples giving me trouble.
After that, I saw a specialist gastroenterologist who deals with bariatric patients. He says that chronic gastritis is quite common in people with already sensitive stomachs who have bariatric surgery/ had excess acid to begin with and then have gallbladder troubles. He's given me a food plan to follow and says it's his largest focus right now to try to get bariatric programs to either take the gallbladder out during surgery, or to at least prescribe actigall every time for a year after surgery to avoid gallbladder issues for folks who lose weight quickly. He also said this is far more common with the sleeve than the rny as we have more acid build up than they do. Note he did say he has seen at least 3 cases a month of this in the last 2 yrs, so if you have gallbladder issues and your stomach still hurts after removal, it's likely this is you as well.
My stomach is healing now finally after 13 months of hell. I caught myself smiling the other day for the first time in a long time.
If you even think you have gallbladder issues, please discuss actigall or a similar drug with your doc if they won't just take it out during surgery or if you don't want them to... It took 8 long horrid months of testing for me to be able to get mine out and then another 5 months of healing to get back to something like normal. And it was totally unnecessary.
    public service announcement
I see my bariatric team this week. I've gained weight (27 lbs) trying to deal with getting food down over the past year and honestly don't care at this point. Maybe I will in a few months when I'm all healed up. Right now I just want them to understand that their decision to not offer actigall or to take out my gb at surgery even though I already has stones was not a good one, perhaps it will change their minds going forward for others. At the very least, a discussion of gallbladder issues should be part of the program so that patients know to ask their PCPs about it.
hugs to all of you! Hope the newbies are all doing well and maybe now that I don't hate, hate, hate my poor beleaguered stomach so much I'll be able to come back more often.

Glad to hear that it is not the staples!!

I am metal sensitive, can only wear gold or titanium in piercings. Have multiple staples with no problem, but if I even wear surgical steel earrings for a few hours they start to get red and swollen and then if I dont take them out (or forget) I will start to get body aches and chills.

    Good luck with your recovery!!
