Default Label reading and Carbs good carbs/bad carbs??? HELP

OOOK I am confused. I read labels on boxes to determine protein content etc. But I also look at the carb/sugar content. I know I am supposed to keep my carbs below say about 35 but so many foods that I think would be good b/c they are high in protein area also high in carbs. So what is the deal? Am I just supposed to avoid the breads and pastas and stuff or what? Should I look at the ingredients to determine what is causing the carbs? HELP ME!
I know beans are high in protein but they are high in carbs too so how do you eat that and stay below the carb count or does that not count???

    Thanks

I been looking mainly at the protiens myself. I don't eat anything that might swell in my tummy. I avoid bread, rice, pasta and sweets. NOW I can't say I never have them...cause I have ...but I do try to limit mysef to them. This is a good question. Hope to see some great answers.

I've heard you can subtract fiber grams off your total carb grams.

Yes, the fiber carbs are OK.
When you have carbs, try to make them whole grain -- they have a lesser spiking effect on your blood sugar.
If you have pasta, make it whole grain pasta. Brown rice over white rice. But all of those should be kept to a minimum.
Stay away from white -- white sugar, white flour, white rice.

My doc says stay under 40 grams carbs. I stay under 30 tops. I eat no bread, pasta, and rice. I stay away from sugar carbs of all types

I have been going low carb to keep blood sugar spikes minimal, I have not taken any diabetes meds since my surgery and my fingersticks are all NORMAL now, that is worth the surgery right there. It is hard, I read on here about people eating refried beans, soups with noodles, ect, but I am sticking with what works. Protien at least 75 day, carbs around 30, calories 600-800. Fluids 64 oZ (this is where I often fail, water just tastes bad....)

I ask the last time I was at the office. My question was how many carbs are we suppose to have a day. She told me to count calories instead and to say under 15 grams of sugar per item.
