After a long wait I got my date

Hi I joined this forum yesterday. I am 51 years old happily married for the last 9 1/2 years to my wonderful husband Dean. I first looked into surgery in 1994 but the surgeon stopped practising so for awhile no one else was doing it in BC. Then in 2007 I found out that weight-loss surgery was available in Victoria BC. I waited for 2 years to see the doctor and in the process changed the procedure I was seeking (first Roux n y then gastric sleeve). At the end of that appointment I was given a number of appointments to fill for the usual requirements and told that from the time they were all complete it would be a 3 - 5 year wait for surgery. In May 2011I was referred to Dr Nam Nguyen and was seen by him the end of September in Richmond BC. In December I saw an occupational therapist for a psych evaluation, and the Dietitian. Then I saw Dr Nguyen and he booked my surgery for February 27th. (Two days after my 52 birthday) I am very excited I have been working with my coach at PAL every week to prepare myself for surgery. I am ready. In the course of the 3 years I have lost 50 lbs (most of it in last 6 month). I look forward to reading your posts as we journey together

I do have an oar in fact I have two of them one is my Faith that this is all part of the plan for my life and the other is the love that I feel for those close to me I want to be around for many years to come. These are my foundation stones and the things that keep me rowing

I am wondering how you're doing now that it's July. I just had my procedure done by Dr. Nguyen (July 16th).

I am doing quite well because of my age and health factors my weight loss hasn't been as fast as some but I am losing about 2 lbs a week and the doctors are pleased with that. I can only exercise in the pool as I have both knees shot with arthritis and need knee surgery. I have gained some muscle in my legs and am fairly pleased with the weight loss. Take care

Hi, I live in Courtenay and have been waiting for the surgeon in Victoria since 2009, it also took me over a year to see him. I went back this June and he told me it was still going to be another 1-2 years and I've decided to not wait but go to Mexico. I am saddened that because of this I will not be able to use the services of local specialists but am determined to make this work for me, especially through forums like this. Sad our system is so backed up. Good luck to you and lets keep in touch

Darlayna, so glad you are doing well. That's great you are losing weight steadily. I am about the same age so my weight loss is slow, too. I am only 3 weeks out of surgery so still new to all of this! So glad you are doing well. You've lost an amazing amount of weight!
tmclenn: How frustrating dealing with those surgeons in Victoria. I went the same route until I found the ones in Richmond. A friend of mine had hers done in Tijuana and is very happy with everything. Best of luck!

I wish I knew about the ones in Richmond, I thought the guy in Victoria was the only one in BC, oh well I am happy to go to Mexico
