    Question Vomiting.

So I have just recently been approved by my insurance to get the sleeve done : I have my doctors appointment set and I just have a few questions I hope some of you are able to answer.

So first off, I have a phobia of vomiting. And while no one likes throwing up, I am a diagnosed emetophobic and have a panic attack when I believe I will throw up, however it doesn't normally happen. My question is, did you throw up and what made you throw up?

Another question I have is how much weight loss did you average per week?

Also, how long after your first doctor's appointment was your surgery?

Thanks guys Sorry to have a question filled post, but I hope I'll find at least one person to be able to answer my questions

    Hi
No one can predict if you will or won't throw up after surgery. The anesthesia alone could cause that. Knowing your issues with it, you could perhaps ask for antinausea drugs right off the bat before surgery and for a few days afterward instead of waiting until you actually feel the nausea.
I do not throw up easily at all and the anesthesia had me dry heaving for the first day after surgery. Then they gave me phenergan and I was fine a day later.

I am just over 3 months out. I've dropped 40 lbs since surgery. It comes to about 2.75 lbs a week. Please bear in mind that there are as many outcomes on this as there are people. I was 300 lbs at surgery date, and I'd already dropped 35 lbs pre-surg. Some who don't have to drop lbs pre-surg lose faster after surgery (has to do with water weight). Some have slower metabolisms and lose slower or do so because they simply have less to lose. Then there is gender...sigh... the guys drop lbs far more quickly than the ladies. It's a hormone thing.

Again, with the docs, each program is different. Has to do with if/what their pre-surg requirements are, and if your insurance will be involved, then what they require. I went to an informational seminar in April and got officially weighed in that week. I was told I had to lose 10% of my excess weight before I could meet with the surgeon. I started on that but hung back.... My insurance approved the sleeve as an option on June 1. Then I kicked into gear with nutritionist, physical therapy, psych and weigh ins. Once I hit my 20 lbs required loss in mid July, I met with the surgeon. My surgery was Aug 22.
All in all it took about 3 months once I found out the ins company would pay for the sleeve surgery. Some insurances require a long period of supervised dieting. Some don't. Perhaps you are self pay.... there are just too many variables to give you an easy answer. If you have insurance, start there. Many don't cover the sleeve yet.

So.... sorry my answers just lead to more questions on your end but this is a complicated process....
    And, welcome, BTW!

Hi Alex, Noone will have a crystal ball for you for the vomiting thing, if you read back on many of our journey you will find some take those first couple of days different than others. I unfortunatly like Grace had some dry heaving issues the night of and the day after surgery, the only thing that seemed to get rid of it was gas-X tounge strips.
I did all my pre op blood work and stuff a month before my consult with my DR and then scheduled my surgery the next week, but Im a self pay.
I had my surgery on Jully 11th this year and I lost 27 lbs the first week and as of today Im down 97 lbs so that is 142 days ago for an average loss of almost 5 lbs a week.
Grace is correct in the fact that everone loses differently as far as the sex of the person is concerned, Also how much you weigh is important as the more you weigh the more you lose at the beginning of this journey.

I usually have a terrible experience waking out of anestesia and vomit too. I told the nurse and the anastesiologist before surgury and they gave me something in my IV right away to prevent it. I was fine until I drank the dye the next morning and that came up, but let your dr. know all this and they will do their best to help you. They want your success just as much as you do

whoo you go Grace! and WElcome welcome to the forum,Alex! I look forward to reading your journey.

my recent experience was that I told them right up front that i had a terrible time w anesthesia after my cancer surgery 11 yrs ago and have never forgotten it, it was so bad. In fact the nurse got into trouble w the doctor because she didn't walk me right away due to my retching.

so, this time I started the morning of surgery (3 hrs b4 by doctor's orders) w a scopalamine patch behind my ear and a dose of Emeticin (?) which is the big gun anti nausea drug usually reserved for folks undergoing Chemo! Then I told the anesthisieologist that I had 2 ruptured discs in my neck and episodes of positional vertigo for years so to please be very careful w my head and neck while I was out! While in the recovery room they gave me compazine in my IV and the rest of the day and the next I got periodic shots of phergan.

Result? Not one whit of nausea ever!

Well, this is until this week when I was given a proscriptive antibiotic in drinkable (sic) form and it sat in my poor teeny tummy and whoosh....I refused to take it again and took some Maalox type stuff that was great and quelled the nausea right away.

Result: I have not thrown up.

But? does anybody know how we sleeved react to that old regular "stomach flu"?
Mourning may last all night but joy comes with the morning light.

This was my first surgery, so I wasn't sure how I might react to anesthesia. I didn't have any nausea at all, which I guess is lucky. The first time I had a dry heave was a week later when I tried some yogurt, but I didn't throw up. In the 7 weeks since my surgery, I have thrown up twice...both times I had some sliced beef...sleevie isn't too fond of sliced beef (yes, yes, I know, beef isn't on the post op menu...that's probably why it came back up!).

I was given anti nausea drugs prior to surgery, and again after surgery because I had a blue dye pressure test, which my surgeon does instead of the barium swallow test. so I had blue dye over my face and neck, and the nurses were washing it off with some kind of alcohol, and I started to feel a bit queasy, and they pushed more anti nausea meds into me right away and then I basically held my breath not to smell the alcohol while they finished cleaning me up. I haven't had any nausea or vomitting at all. I really listen to my tummy when I eat, and make sure I don't eat too much, though i am only on day 12, and just eating yogurt, instant cereal and soup.

Hi Alex. I totally hate throwing up, despise it (not phobic) but will try very hard not to. I did not have problems with nausea after surgery, but when first drinking, I did throw it back it. It was not like regular throwing up with retching for me, just the stuff I drank that came back up. I have had maybe 3 episodes since then where I have tried to eat too quick or maybe tried to advance quicker than my body was ready to on the diet and they were all the same. Just the stuff coming back up, nothing major and no real nausea per say. I lost 13 pounds the first week and then about 2 to 3 pounds a week for a total of about 35 pounds now 7 weeks out? The whole process with my insurance took about 7 months, Aetna requirement is (6 months). All insurance is different. Depends on how much you have to lose before surgery, insurance requirements and doctor requirements. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

I had the dry heaves on and off during the night immediately after surgery. I think it was the anesthesia that did it. It ended the next day. I have had different surgeries before, and never was affected.

Grace gave great advice (as usual )

unfortunatley the bad news about vommiting.... everyone is different though but unfortunately I battled alot with vommiting, the first 3 days after surgery I couldnt even keep water down. I was vommiting every hour then it got a little bit easier as the weeks went on it went from almost every hour to only 3 times a day then after about 2 months went to about every second or 3rd day but after about 3 months my vommiting stopped all together. I only vomit now if I dont chew my food properly or I eat to fast but I am one of the extreme cases some people are lucky enough not to vomit at all. you can never predict these things. I am 6 months post op and I have lost 88 pounds....
