    Default Post op diet.

I was given a pre-op diet which I followed to the letter for a month. It was a tasty mix of food, so I did not really mind it too much.

I noticed that the diet after the surgery is different than the one given before I had the procedure, why is that??? I thought that both diets were aimed to help me lose weight?

Silly. That is because you need to be on a liquid diet for about 2 or 3 weeks after your surgery. This would help your stomach heal without being overworked while it is still healing. After that comes the food that is pureed, and then textured food. Also if you notice, the serving sizes are smaller, because it's what your new stomach can handle.

Diffrent Drs have diffrent post op diets all geared for your weight loss and to get your tummy back on regualr foods after a period of time.

I know I was on pureed food after 5 days and then after 2 weeks of that I went on to musshies for 2 weeks. Also my post op diet is very low carb and I have noticed that many people don't do low carb after.

No beans, rice, bread or potatos for 7 months for me.

That is correct, the post op diet is designed to help you heal and lose weight. but more than that, the diet plan you had before your surgery is designed to shrink your liver and make it easy for your surgeon to do the operation on you. It also depends on how heavy you are and what your consultant thinks is best to prepare you for the surgery.

I would like to reiterate how important it is to follow both your post and pre op diets as recommended by your dietitian to the letter. Especially for the post-op diet... DO NOT get ahead of your consultant. If your dietitian tells you to have liquid diets for another week, then you should follow him or her! You may see small wounds on your stomach area, and you may feel fine enough to eat solid foods, but you'd never know how much damage that is going to do INSIDE!

It used to be a thrice weekly thing in my case, then it gradually became fewer and fewer. I see my doctor once a fortnight now.

Call me crazy, but I tend to prolong each stage. I think that it was close to two months after I had my surgery before I ate anything solid. Before that, I was crazily drinking water in small amounts each time. I would take one sip every 20 minutes or so. I just felt parched!

Drinking small sips does take a long time to get all your fluids in. I love my SF popsicles! They really help me get in fluids those first 2 weeks. Here I am only in my 3rd week and I still have a few a day!

For a succesful weight loss after surgery, patient is always advised to follow a propper nutritional guidelines. Patient should take liquid diet especially for first two weeks. In second week, patient can take pureed foods including fish, eggs, yogurt. After four to five weeks of surgery, one can start taking solid foods. Chew your food slowly, avoid drinking water in between meals. Whether after gastric sleeve surgery, adjustable band surgery or bypass surgery, one should follow nutiotional guidelines to avoid any risks and complications.

My surgery was done my dr. Marvin and university general. When I saw a nutritionist they told me I has to stay all clear liquids for a week, the dull liquids for the second. After my surgery I was told i would go to soft mushy foods the second week. I am still on my first week and will be able to eat soft solids tomorrow!! I've lost 18 pounds so far

Your pre-op diet it to reduce the size of your liver for surgery, not specifically to loose weight - its just a nice extra that comes with it. The post -op diet is both to give you the nutrients you need while your stomach is healing and to loose weight.
