Default Normal weight loss after vertical sleeve gastrectomy?

Hi there. I've had the gastric sleeve surgery a week ago, and I'm telling you I'm thrilled about losing all these extra weight I have. But to be honest, I am quite disappointed. I've heard of stories and read of testimonials that say they lost an immediate 10lbs after the surgery up to the first week. I only lost around 3lbs.

I don't mean to sound impatient, but am I under par as far as weight loss is concerned?

    Hi Alynnea:

I wouldn't be too worried. You have just had your surgery, and the weight loss seen is varies for different people. Give it time, and you will see the weight loss. Of course, if you really want to reap the full benefits of a VSG, then you should start exercising as soon as you can and watch your food intake.

Also you were pumped full of IV fluids and they take time to come off.
I was told not to weigh for 2 weeks.

Stick to your post op diet and you'll do well

I agree. You might have lost a little of your weight, but think about it. On the average, you only lose 24% of your excess weight after the first month, then 36% on after three months. The most dramatic weight loss occurs on the 6th month where you can lose as much as 50% of your excess weight. Nothing much is said about your first week, though.

Give it time Alynnea I think that you're stressing yourself too much over the lack of weight loss. I am sure you are excited, but there is no sense in defeating yourself with the thought of being a failure this early Remember that you can lose up to 40% to 60% of your excess weight in two years, depending on how healthy your lifestyle post-op is.

You should note that as time goes by, the percentage of weight loss tapers off... after a year, it is very possible for you to lose up 60% of your excess weight.

It also depends on how heavy you were to start with. People with BMIs of 35 to 45 see the most benefit out of the surgery. So if you were overweight, but not necessarily obese, you might see less dramatic weight loss.

I have watched others & I think they are loosing double each week that I am. I had my op 9th July (6 weeks ago) & I have lost only 8kg's (17 Pounds), not sure if thats good or bad, will find out next week when I see my surgeon, I have had since one week after the op an infection which burst & has to be redressed & packed everyday, Stomach is annoyed with all the tape.

Can anyone tell me how much they have lost at the 6 week time

    Smile Weight loss

I had my sleeve done on 6th April and have lost 23 kgs (about 50 lbs) and have about the same to go. I am happy with this as I have not been able to exercise much. I try to eat healthy food but have small amounts of whatever I fancy too. I don't think diet anymore, and feel much more relaxed and really happy with the way things are going. The first few months are hard, but it does get better! Good luck!

No, I went with Dr Nolan of Southport Bariatrics and had the op done at Allamanda, as closer to home. My friend at work did the same last month and it is so good to be able to support each other. She has found it hard recently, but doing better last week. There must be quite a few of us on the Gold Coast. We can all help each other. Take it easy..

I had my gastic sleeve op on the 8 June and to date have lost 22 kilo. I only lost about 3-4 kilos that first week after surgery, but have had a slow and steady loss every month of about 5 kilos. My surgeon says it is not a quick fix, but a slow and steady process. I look at this way that any weight lost is better than going on. You can not help but lose weight as you can not eat the amount of food anything like you were before the surgery.
Be kind to yourself and stay positive. The weight will come off....

Your stats look amazing. You are doing really well. It looks like a similar weight loss to mine and I see you had your surgery about a week before me.
