I started packing boxes when we signed the contract to build the new house, so I packed sporadically from May until October. We were reducing from a large 5 bedroom house to a 3-bedroom house, so I had lots of purging to do. As I packed, I would identify items I couldn't use in the new house and carry them right to the car for donating to Goodwill. That way I wasn't likely to change my mind. I thought I'd done a pretty good job of paring down to what we would actually use. BUT...I will tell you now....figure out what you can actually use in your new place, and get rid of the rest NOW. Even after all my purging before the move, I've already taken 4 SUV loads of stuff to the Goodwill in our new city. I'm talking about incidents where I cut open the box and walked straight to the car with items, mumbling "WHY did I pack this???" Forget sentimentality...if you can't use it, give it to someone who can. Don't move into your new place and cram all the closet full of stuff you won't see again until the next time you move.
