    Default Surgery Soon

Nineteen days before surgery and excited & scared at the same time. Looking forward to moving forward and just needing to learn from this blog and other educational sites to keep me on the right path...

I weigh 316.8 lbs and still play tennis 3-4 times a week but really hard on the body at my current weight. Wondering how long I need to stay off the courts after surgery and other base fitness to keep me positive and energized.

Bruce, Great choice to have the surgery. I am an old weightlifter, golfer and former athlete. I was told I could begin lighter weight training after 7 weeks. I began walking the day of surgery. At your weight and the fact you are interested in sports and fitness you will lose quickly. I started at 307 and lost 19lbs on the 2week pre-op liquid diet. I lost 25 in the first month and 15 the second month. I then settled in a steady 8-10lbs loss per month. I was at 246 just 3 month after surgery. I reached 210 and then settled in at around 218 which I maintained for 3 years. I play over 100 rounds of golf per year and feel great. My knees, ankles and hips are no longer painful. I did lose a lot of raw strength in the first 8 months but constant weight training brought back most of it. At my age, 67, my doctor wanted me to go back to 50-70% of my usual weights. I do more reps and less weights. My days of heavy weightlifting are behind me.

You will do well. Keep us posted. The important things are walking and the fluid intake. Also follow the nutrition guide to the letter. Your tennis game may improve but you will feel so much better and enjoy better health. Best of luck.

Ask your surgeon. I was cleared to exercise after 2 weeks. But I was also used to exercising, hiked, skied, etc. even when I was overweight.

Best of luck on your surgery! It's so much fun!

You will soon be flying around that tennis court again!
Check with your surgeon as stated above but it won't be long and you will sooooo notice a difference.
Walking as soon as you can - I was up the day of my surgery and walking around the ward - slowly and with a drip but was encouraged to do it.
Increase the time and the distance as you feel able and you will be back on the court before you know it :-)

My surgeon advised me not to go in for about 2 months, but I’m not going to play tennis for half a year, and the basic ones can be done in 6-7 weeks.
