    Default Caffeine and Alcohol

I have to give up caffeine and alcohol for my pre-op diet on Sept 22/17. Regarding long term, who has given up caffeine (coffee) or (pop) and who has given up alcohol long term with the sleeve surgery? I'm guessing I will be in no shape to drink either for at least a month post-op. However what is the status regarding long term? Will I ever be able to drink coffee again with the sleeve? What about alcohol, and if so, can I drink beer or it limited to wine? etc? Any thoughts on this would be great!!!

I have given up beer and carbonation completely. I do drink coffee and tea daily. I also will have a glass of wine or mixed drink occasionally but I am also almost 11 months out.

I'm supposed to be weaning off of caffeine now. My surgeon said no alcohol for a year. That's going to be tough and my primary Dr won't prescribe something for my anxiety, at the suggestion of the psychiatrist who cleared me for surgery. Ugh. I changed primary Dr's.

I'm almost 4 month post op and I do drink caffeinated tea. I gave up a 20+ year diet coke habit 7 months before surgery. I'm totally ok with it! I haven't tried coffee yet. I was also told no alcohol for 1 year.

I am 10 1/2 months post op. I drink coffee daily and never had to give up caffeine pre op or post op. I do also drink alcohol. Not carbonated alcohol or drinks. The carbonation does not set well with me. Long story short, I will probably not add carbonation back to my diet any time soon. Most carbonated things are not good for you anyways so no love loss.

I resumed my coffee habit at 2 months out. I drink a minimum of 3 cups of coffee daily without issues.

I'm also a very occasional drinker of mixed liquor drinks such as margaritas, piña coladas, and rum with coke.

I have cut down on coffee, but do have coffee daily. Hardly ever drink diet sodas and never sugar sodas. I cut out alcohol for 3 months pre-op and 6 months post-op. Now I drink 5 ounces of wine most days. But really just that single drink. Sometimes, instead I have 1.5 ounces of single malt scotch. And yes, I measure all alcohol.

You'll do yourself a favor to be kind to your baby, traumatized sleeve for as long as possible by not drinking stuff that puts more acid in your sleeve. You'll be taking antacid meds to reduce your stomach acid for several months post op, so don't add extra acid.

Then there's the possibility of transfer addiction from food to alcohol. It's not likely, but a possibility. People who have trouble with alcohol post op tend to be those who had trouble with alcohol pre op. Key word there is "tend" to be.

If you're serious about educating yourself on these fronts, you can google all these WLS issues.

I couldn't stomach coffee for almost 7 months after my surgery. Now I drink about 2 cups daily with no issues. I gave up soda almost completely. It fills me up too fast. I drink diet decaf iced tea. My drink of choice.
I do have wine or alcohol occasionally, but I am 3 years post op. I do love a good Old Fashioned.
Right after my surgery I couldn't drink plain water. I found hot tea, no sugar or milk felt good, so that was my liquid. It worked for me.

I don't miss caffeine in the slightest. I think I actually have more energy now and sleep better too. Alcohol-I have had a few beers since surgery and don't think I have finished one in a single day. But the most I usually drank anyways was a beer or two every other month.

I was drinking coffee again 2-3 months out.
I do have an occasional michelob ultra. I stopped soda completely (used to love diet coke). I've had a sip here or there but it doesn't taste good to me.
On vacation 2 weeks ago, I had a crazy amount of strawberry daiquiris (drank more than I ate that week).

I haven't had any caffeine since about 3 months pre op and do not miss it in the least ( I have never had a cup of coffee in my life) the reason they want you to give up caffeine is it can induce reflux and after surgery we have a increased chance of reflux to start with. If you are not having any reflux issues then caffeine shouldn't be a issue. As far as alcohol I am not a drinker so won't comment about it best of luck to you on your surgery.

I never drank adult beverages in the first place, so I can't comment on that. But, I gave up carbonated drinks completely and I started drinking coffee right away. Coffee was a little bit uncomfortable at first, but well, it's coffee and I love it! LOL!

My favorite drink is strawberry crush, hawaiian punch, and walmart brand cherry-limeade little envelopes you add to bottles of water. They don't contain caffeine, so they are great for hydration and have some flavor. I make them and freeze them. I spend a lot of time commuting and it keeps my drinks cold in the car in the Texas heat...

I'm 2 months out and just now introducing decaf coffee but only drink about 1/2 a cup. I love warm drinks but they don't always love me back LOL I know that in the past I liked to have a drink socially but I made this commitment to change my life. When I go out with friends, concerts, get-together of any kind, I just bring my own cup and have a great time! People never ask what I'm drinking (it's usually iced tea) LOL

It was funny.... I was at a pool party and the hosts like to do a shot when everyone arrives. I knew this and went to where they were being poured and I poured one with my iced tea. When she was passing them around mine was on the tray. I grabbed it and may have even made a toast.... it was a fun day and I am so happy to be embracing the time with those I love and no longer focus on the food/drink at a gathering. I went into it from the very beginning that I can have a fun time no matter what and that is just what I have done (and continue to do)!

PS My Daugher is getting married this weekend and they have a signature champagne drink. This was my drink of choice in the past (champagne) but my new tummy and carbonation do not mix. It is all about the choices... and I choose health and happiness over all the crap that "weighed" me down for too many years!!!!!
