    Default Post Sleeve diet dilemma

Hi everyone, I had the Gastric sleeve August 2019.

    My biggest weight was 317lbs.

So it’s been nearly 10 months since my operation.

I am currently up and down at 255lbs.

I am not going to lie. I don’t have a regular protein supplement which I know I should be, I think when I first had the surgery and was drinking the protein shakes I struggled and it put me off big time to the point where I stopped drinking them.

My food/drink diet is a disgrace. I am eating empty foods and drinking carbonated drinks that I let go flat.

I also need to find a flavourless protein powder as I really don’t want flavoured ones, this will help me introduce the daily protein my body needs.

For example a list of the foods I’m eating are -

    Bread
    Crisps
    Chocolate
    Sweets
    Biscuits
    Ice creams
I try to eat meat but I know it’s density makes me feel sick so quickly
I eat vegetables too but try to eat meat then I feel sick so stop

When I say I feel sick I mean I haven’t over eaten but like after a few bites I feel like being sick and then I physically can’t chew another bite. I have been sick a fair few times in the first months post op but I couldn’t control that, I was still learning what I can/can’t eat.

I haven’t been to see a nutritionist like I know should be done because I tried via my doctor and they said because I paid for the treatment privately I can’t have see a nutritionist on the NHS! I believe I should go and see one but haven’t sorted it yet.

I have come on here to post this to firstly be honest with myself and my eating habits. To ask for your guys help because you’ve been through it/ going through it and I hope are willing to help me along this journey??

Realisation is I had the surgery because I knew I was going to end up medically unwell in the long run as well as I want to be here for my wife, my son and twin girls too.

I apologise if I have rambled on and you’ve read all this but I needed to share it with people who understand and have gone through this

I appreciate your time, advice, kind words and any support given as I want to turn this around for the good!!!

    Thankyou

    John S

    Hi John

I think you have really answered your own questions.

I'm going to be blunt here so stop reading if you don't want to hear it...…..

There is absolutely no point in having weight loss surgery if you are not prepared to change the way you eat. It is an absolute waste of time and money. All the things that you listed that you are eating are what got you (and probably all of us) in trouble in the first place.

However...you have recognised that what you are eating is wrong - so that is a good step forward :-). Now you need to walk the talk.

Get yourself to a nutritionist pronto - but please, please make sure it is one who deals with weight loss surgery patients. Is your surgeon not able to offer any assistance? Do you still have all the documentation that was given to you in the beginning? You really need to go back to square one and start again.

You know how it has to work, protein first, then good veggies then if room some good carbs. Nearly 3 years out I don't have room for much after the protein portion of my meal has been eaten. A good nutritionist should be able to help you with suggestions for protein that you can tolerate.

I used to have a protein shake every morning for breakfast but have switched to a spinach smoothie. It doesn't taste like a protein shake (not as sweet) and has the added nutritional value of veg and fruit. It also keeps me fuller for longer. Lunch is generally cottage cheese, a couple of light crackers, some tomatoes and cucumber. I'm a creature of habit and I like this meal so that is what I have most days. Dinner is protein of some sort, chicken or fish mostly, or a little read meat - I still find it difficult to digest too much beef or lamb, minced or casseroled is ok. If I need a snack during the day then it is a mini light Babybel cheese, and a few carrot and celery sticks, sometimes a piece of fruit in the afternoon for something sweet. And of course I drink water all day every day.

Eggs are always a good protein source too. You may need to be creative with your meals.

Thank about the reasons that you had the surgery in the first place. Your health and your family....but mostly you had it for you!

You can do this but it sounds like you could do with some help. Maybe a counsellor might help?

There are lots of really good people on this forum and I'm sure some others will be along shortly with their 2 cents worth.

It is really positive that you have recognised that you need to make changes for this to work for you but please get some help. It's hard to do it by yourself.

Please let us know how you are getting on. There is always someone here to listen.

    Wishing you all the best.

I’m at work atm but can you tell me your recipe for the spinach smoothie please? Sounds like something I need to try before going all out on protein powders etc

    Thankyou

    John,

I was a similar starting weight to yours and understand your struggles. A couple menu suggestions. First set a time of night that you no longer eat after. Increase your water consumption. As far as protein drinks have you tried Premier Protein? They sell it at Costco and other places. They have several flavors and for me they by far taste the best.

Have you tried sugar free sports drinks? Power aid zero is not bad. A couple menu suggestions. I noticed you didn't
mention any fish. A nice white filet or salmon with green vegetables works for me. Try spinach, fresh green beans or brocoli. Instead of meat why not chicken or turkey. I struggle with chicken breast but boneless chicken thighs are very easy on my sleeve. Use a low fat low calorie chicken based soup and you have a nice casserole with the chicken.

I also struggle with sweets. Try fresh fruit instead of the items you mentioned. Berries, melons and citrus may help.

My suggestion for those on a "stall" is to go back to the basics. Increase water consumption, walk more and increase greens. Don't go to the store hungry. Plan your meals instead of grazing.

If you have a GNC store near you they have a good selection of protein supplements. Sometimes they have small samples to try before buying a larger container. Go to the menu section on this site and try some of the suggestions.

Good luck. You can do this. By the way I went from 307 to 207 in 8 months. I stabilized at around 212. If I can do it so can you.

    John,
Do you like protein drinks? There is no rule so far out that says that you HAVE to drink them. However, you must have some type of protein source. You already know the problem, you had surgery to correct the problems, so now you have to as Kiwi said "walk the walk." Get back to basics. Get out your bariatric bible. Look it over. Start planning your meals. Planning is important. Take the time, think for breakfast, lunch and dinner the things that you would like to eat. You have to do this for all of the reasons that you listed in your post. You can do this. Come back here often. We are here to help you.

The spinach smoothie is good - thanks to sraebaer for putting us on to it.
    I use:
Couple of handfuls of fresh baby spinach leaves (usually weighs about 30-40 grams).
100-200 mls milk - or any milk substitute (almond/soy etc),- de[pends how thick you like your smoothie
Half a banana - you can use a whole one if small
A handful of frozen fruit (approx. 100 gm) - I get a frozen specific smoothie mix which includes mango, pineapple, passionfruit and strawberries (I tried a totally berry one and it made the smoothie a very unattractive brown colour. Tasted ok but looked revolting).
1/2 scoop unflavoured protein powder - you could use a whole scoop if you are trying increase your protein intake.
If not sweet enough - sometimes the fruit isn't, I add a small amount of Torani sugar free vanilla syrup. Usually it is ok without.

I throw it all in at Nutribullet or similar and blend until smooth and green :-)
You could use a blender if you don't have a Nutribullet but I found better results when using the bullet. It was worth the outlay to purchase one as I use it most days.

These days when I am short of time and resort to a straight protein shake I find them really sweet.

    Hope it helps.

Also, planning is a big thing for me. I know what I am going to eat each day and shop accordingly. If I am working in the office I prepare my food the night before so it is all good to go in the morning - I'm not a morning person. I even make and freeze my smoothie the night before and it is usually thawed out by the time I want to have it at work - I'm also not very good at eating first thing in the morning.

Another thing that keeps me on track is to record everything I eat - good and bad. I use an online app and also write it in a diary.

I weigh and measure all my food and I weigh myself every single day. Now this is not for everyone but it is what I need to do to keep myself accountable. Weighing every day means there are no big surprises and I can sort out any weight gain before it gets out of control. I give myself a leeway of around 2 kgs as we all know that we will weigh differently on different days.

Hi, No I don’t want to be like that!! I know that I have really slipped and gone against everything that I need to do but my emotional mindset hasn’t been balanced and I believe this has attributed to lack of focus and control on my diet alongside this coronavirus pandemic and being completely out of routine.

BUT, I am regaining focus and I will get back on track.

I do like protein drinks but I think maybe looking into an alternative source maybe a better option. I will look into getting protein drinks pre made and use them as a meal replacement or as part of the daily routine. I also am looking into getting a nutri-bullet too Or similar type.

I’m researching and trying to find a nutritionist who specialises in bariatric nutrition near me.

I think from what you’ve all said I need to pre prepare my daily meals, speak to a nutritionist to develop a meal plan/diet that I can stick to and stay focused on. I have self referred myself to counselling and have an appointment (via phone) on 29th of this month. In the meantime I Will need to get focused, stay focused and not give in.

If I am honest with you all and myself today I had some hula hoops and couple biscuits. A thin bagel with jam, a sandwich thin with corned beef and tomatoe and I should of not done it but I need to work on my mindset and control as well. This will only come if I want it too and I need it too. I know I haven’t got the willpower but I need to because it’s affecting who I am and how I am too.

I am going to get the results I want and will work to get them, it’s a matter of how badly I want it I guess??

Thankyou guys I really appreciate your time and words. Blunt is best in this situation so no sugar coating feelings for sake of it.

    Hi John,
I had my surgery in 2016 and have been struggling with gaining back during Covid quarantine, sliding back into old habits of empty carbs; bread, chips, etc. Those are things you can overeat and not feel full, even with your sleeve! n However, when I was having success, I was very strict about my meals and snacks containing protein. I don't think you need a protein supplement if you eat the right foods. You say the density of meat makes you "sick" ... are you sure you are just not feeling full? Is the meat lean? Are you taking small bites and chewing properly? The goal is to feel full with a small amount of food, and protein is what will do that! I did well with eggs/egg whites or protein shake for breakfast, cottage cheese or fat free sugar free Greek yogurt for snacks, and chicken, fish or lean pork with cooked vegetables and MEASURED 1/4 cup of rice or other carb for lunch & dinner. An occasional protein bar (low sugar) if I needed something on the run, but those are more caloric so you have to be careful. Get rid of those chips! You can do it!

I don’t think it’s a case of feeling full because even small bites I can feel sick after only 2/3 bites of chicken etc... I think sometimes my body doesn’t like to digest the food. I can chew a couple bites and then the next one stop and physically want to throw it out and not for feeling sick or full but I just can’t stomach it!! It’s a strange feeling and only started post op but I do understand it and know how to deal with that.

I’ve purchased a Nutri-Bullet today and when I get off from nights I will buy some good veggies and fruits etc to try new smoothies and see what works best for me

My diet was easy, protein first, then veggies, then good carbs if room (like fruit). I had surgery 6 years ago and rarely eat stuff like bread, biscuits or bagels. For lunch I just had a delicious salad topped with chicken.

Sounds great that you're meeting with a nutritionist. He/she will help. The easiest thing for me is to keep on track is to have no junk in the house.

    You can do it!

Reading these comments saying you can't eat that way as I'm chowing down on french fries.

I eat everything I want, but only for dinner. Protein shake for breakfast. Protein shake for lunch. Whatever i want for dinner. Tonight is a patty melt and french fries from Freddy's. I also have difficulty with meat, so I have to eat carbs or I'll starve to death as they're the only thing my stomach will consistently keep down.
