Default Doctors, energy, and losing weight

So, my husband and I were just having a joking conversation about how I could get some energy. Crack - he says that only gives you energy to buy more crack. Pills, adderall, etc. I said "Well, I do have ADD. He said my doctor would probably prescribe me some adderall. Big negative! Which made me think back to my doctor. Any time I ever went to him when I was bigger, he'd tell me to lose weight. That's his cure all for everything. So I wonder what now. I lost the weight, and it fixed NOTHING! I still have zero energy and everything still hurts. But hey, I look better, and as my ex always says it's better to look good than feel good.

Just wondering if any of you guys have the same kind of doctor who thinks losing weight is the magic pill for everything. Why do they always blame everything on being fat? Sure it's not good for you to be fat, but being skinny clearly isn't the answer for everything.

Edit to add - I get in all my protein every day, and I take a multivitamin.

    Interesting post Katrina.
Firstly I'm sorry that you are not feeling too flash. I can't really give you any advice on that.....other than maybe get a second opinion?

Doctors! Well, there seem to be some that look for an "easy" answer - lose weight - and some that actually care and try to do the best for you.
My GP was the latter. He had been my doctor for about 40 years and he never advised me to lose weight as a solution to any issue I had....I guess he knew that I already knew that I should. He was always caring and compassionate, and he always tried to do that best for me.
When I went to him to discuss WLS he was great. He talked through the options with me, was totally supportive, he even tried to see if I qualified for the public system (I didn't. Ironically I was "too healthy"). I'm speaking about him in the past tense as he has recently retired. This has been quite traumatic for me as I have had to find another GP. It's hard to find someone that you trust. I have since registered with someone else and have met him....but I don't think he has the same empathy. However I have to start somewhere I guess.

Katrina, have you considered eating more nutritious food and becoming more physically active?

I offer that suggestion because you frequently post here about how fortunate you are to not have gained weight even though you eat lots of junk food and don't exercise.

I swear, this is not a snarky post. And I could be completely off base, since I don't know what you actually do eat and how active you are or aren't.

Ann, I certainly could and should eat more nutritiously. Some days I do great with nutrition, others not so much. The physical activity? I dont know about that. I'm sooo tired and drained all the time. As in I can't even talk myself into getting dressed to go do fun stuff. I'm a gambler, yet I can't even make myself go to the casino. Just the thought of putting on clothes, make up, and leaving the house is exhausting. I knew I was in trouble when I had a wallet full of money and couldn't even get up to go gamble. That's why I started taking vitamins. It's been a couple of months since I started them. Maybe it will get better the longer I take them?

Kiwi, I hope it all works out with your new GP. I asked around to whom people would recommend for a new doctor, and they all said the doctor I already use. Bummer. I'm just not that fond of him.

I guess being fat is an easy answer to any problem. You need to find a new doctor! You are a special case, able to eat whatever and still stay skinny. But if you're taking your vitamins and getting in your protein there shouldn't be a problem. I don't understand why you have no energy.

Does it make you feel better for me to be jealous of your low weight and eating habits? I am. But I realize it's an issue and I shouldn't be jealous.

    Hope you find an answer!

    Hi Katrina,

    Just a thought.
I have invested in massage for most of my adult life.

I know for me, if I don't- I feel as you described thin or fat! If I am honest.

I am talking what is known here as a medical massage or sports massage or even combined with Chiropractor techniques.

I swear it rids my body of toxins but I have to do it at least once a month and when its needed once a week.

I find that they get rid of the muscles that ache and pain me and then I have the energy.

Just a thought for you and yes it makes me mad that I have to do this just to sustain my well being for years and years but if I don't I get to the point where I think if I relied upon just my Dr's advice and I have moved 18 times so I have come across a few! Then I dread to think where I would be as they wanted to give me steroids and pain killers. I ended up at the age of 30 with a perforated peptic ulcer. Through use of anti inflammatory medication.

Thats why I look at alternatives. Plus I have found I am very sensitive to certain foods diet coke was a real problem for me I was an addict! 2 litres a day in my 30's also contributed to my ulcer but I swapped for any cola and still I had massive problems it made me ill, but I was an addict.

I got myself off the lot 5 years ago and yes I feel better, but I also have problems with Wine and certain additives all sorts of stuff, so I used to always eat healthy I just used to drank crap! It made a big difference. But I am still unable to drop massage entirely.

Yes... I do feel better! but I still have aches and pains that only become under control through massage and chiropractor and I Do feel so much better for more stretching and exercise.

I don't know if some of this might help you.

Sorry you feel so tired and lacking in energy might be worth thinking about also I sometimes go for acupuncture and sauna I like detox in any way I can it works for me but ... I really have to keep it up if I stop for a few months it tends to manifest itself again.

Might be something to think about to help you.

    Wish you well.

I take all my vitamins but when I need an energy boost I take more B-12. I use the liquid with the little eye dropper. When my wife tried some for a couple days she was bouncing off the walls. It does give you an energy boost. Worth a try. Coffee, low fat chicken links and my vitamins and off to see my personal trainer.

I wonder if you've got fibromyalgia Katrina. You've also been through a lot in the last few years. Don't everyone jump on me but some anti depressants work really well for fibromyalgia ... zero energy and everything hurts... sounds a bit like it. Of course that wouldn't be the only route. I think it would be worth looking for another doctor and if you wanted to treat it more naturally you could look for an integrative medicine doctor. I do hope you get some answers on it though.

Stacey, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia several years ago. I was prescribed Effexor for it. It helped with the pain so much, but the side effects were not something I could live with. That stuff took a huge toll on my love life. I decided I'd rather be in pain that not able to enjoy time with my husband. Also, I was not warned about how horrific coming off that stuff is. For about a week i thought I was going to die, like seriously die. I didn't even know who I was. It was a crazy experience. No more antidepressants for me.

I agree with Ann2 -- I have found I can eat whatever I want....but a few days of sweets over the holiday, and even though no gain nor water retention, I lacked energy and felt crappy. Back on track, and learned a lesson!

Have you had your thyroid checked? If not I'd suggest going to an endocrinologist and having them run the full battery on you. Could be lots of things like low thyroid production, anemia, or a sodium absorption problem. Some of this is stuff a standard blood panel can miss. That's my idea beyond what the others have suggested.

One more thought ... how much actual WATER are you drinking?

6-8 glasses of water a day makes the most incredible difference compared to 1-2 glasses.

I second what Jackalope81 said, that it could be an endocrine issue. Your thyroid may be giving you the trouble. Coupled with the fibromyalgia, and it's a snowball effect. I don't have thyroid issue, but I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and will not take the medicines for it for the same reasons you won't. I am already on medication to treat my bipolar disorder, and I've found the medicine that works for me in that regard. I won't fool with it. It took too long to find the right treatment. Fluids are important too. How does your blood pressure and heart rate run? If they are on the lower side, which is common after losing all this weight, that will DEFINITELY make you sleepy.
Good luck with finding your answer. and I hope you find a DR that's right for you. Remember, everyone else can like someone, but if your gut is telling you 'caution' or things aren't working with your dr, try to find someone else.

    Take care,
    ~*~Christina~*~
