Unhappy New surgery candidate w weight question

Hello. I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone could help me w a question. I was seen by my surgeon yest for the first time. My BMI at weigh in was literally 35.5. I have a comorbitity that made me eligible for the gastric sleeve by literally 0.5. He told me not to gain or lose any weight. Ummm OK, how am I suppose to stay the same exact weight for 3 weigh in's, my insurance requires 3 months of weight visits. So I can have the surgery in August. When I asked him and the staff if there was any wiggle room they said just don't lose or gain weight. Again how is that possible bc you do not weigh the same at certain times of day and other factors such as using the bathroom, menses, ect. I can see gaining maybe, but if I lose 1-2 # before Aug does that mean my insurance will deny me? If anyone knows the answer to this can you please help me out? I don't know how I will stay exactly 190 lbs.

Hi, sorry I can’t help answer your question as I was self pay so know nothing about insurance requirements but I’m sure somebody on here will be able to help. I just wanted to say welcome to the forum and good luck with your surgery.

Easy. Before you go to the doctor drink as much water as you can stand. Also do you weigh in with shoes? Wear your heaviest shoes. Also put some small weight plates in your pockets. You need to be above the 35 BMI not exactly at it. I'll bet he meant don't lose more weight on the next visits.

Trust me, your bariatric team will not deny performing your surgery just because you have lost or gained a few pounds. They will make sure that your insurance requirements are met.

Welcome! Good advice so far. I was self pay at about your BMI, so didn't have to do the other things.

Welcome to the forum. Consult with your doctor. I'm sure there's a way you can achieve the required weight. One way or another, the surgery must happen.

I had a similar issue where my BMI was 40 without comorbidities, and insurance would deny below 40. Yes I had the 3 month supervised diet requirement as well. For the most part prior to surgery, I followed my normal lifestyle routine and maintained where I was. Then two weeks pre-op, when I had to start the liquid diet, I started losing weight. At that point, I had already received insurance auth so was good to go. Good luck!
