    Default no soda or straw?

My insurance requires 6 Monthlyy visits w nutritionist. I have had 2 so far. My next is May 21.
    # 6 will put me at the end of August.
    So far, so good.
I am actually relieved to put an end to this madness (over eating)
I have been doing well with eating less and losing weight.
Been making a few modifications every few weeks/month from a long list..(eat slower, not sit in front of computer, chew 20 times etc etc)
    No fried foods.
Everything has been easy and I actually welcome the changes.

    HOWEVER !
The one thing I think I will have a hard time with is NO SODA!
    I am diet coke junkie.
    Also, I love straws!
I *could* do ice tea, but still love fountain drinks...the straws. I am an ex-smoker and love sucking on the straw!
I am giving up fried foods, sweets and most carbs for 6 months and large portions for the rest of my life...
But I just am having a hard time thinking about a life without a soda? EVER?
    and NO STRAW?

Now, I am not asking for license to break the rules...but was this an issue for anyone else?
    Did anyone else have soda?
what happened? does it stretcher the stomach? why no carbonation? why no straw?
she said air bubbles...I don't understand...

I don't drink beer or wine, NO coffee, have gone cold turkey on cigs (hello 200 lb weight gain!) and will be modifying portions (how) and foods (what) I eat...
now my soda and even straws??
I must admit of all things this is making me worried...

My nutritionist just said that straw rule is for early on. So it's only for a while! No worries.

Carbonation won't stretch your stomach, that's a myth. But once again, it's not good for you early on. Some people never go back to it as it bothers their stomach or they just choose the healthy choice of skipping soda.

I used to be a soda addict, now I either have one once a day or skip it all together. In the winter I was skipping it, now that it's warmer I have one most days.

All I can say is follow all the rules. The weight will fall off. It's so much fun! I'm over 6 years out and have maintained my weight, but now it's work. I still follow the protein first rule. I really have to make a conscious effort to eat the right things and exercise. I do allow the occasional treat! My life is really no different than it was before, except that I'm not obese. I enjoy all foods, just not in the quantity I used to. Good luck! No worries!

I prefer a straw with soda, but I've never gone back to soda post sleeve. Just seemed like a good time to have one less artificial thing while I rebuilt my health in such a dramatic way.

I have tried a carbonated beverage, like a sparkling wine. But can't do more than 1/4 C or polite sip without some discomfort. Everyone has different responses to things.

I drink a lot of decaf coffee, decaf ice tea and I use stevia since my oncologist says no to aspartame.

    And water water water!

    Thanks Annie
oh yeah, looking at my checklist of things to modify...why no caffeine?

i didn't notice that when she gave this list to me so she never discussed/explain why. I can understand carbonation and bubbles and straw..but what does caffeine have to do w sleeve?

Also, fried foods? is it just because they are calorically dense aka "fattening" so if I am going to be eating limited quantities she wants me getting nutrition not 1/2 cup of fries at a meal? lol
but even PRE surgery,,,my prep to do list is NO fried foods...wondering why?
is it just to start to modify/retrain my eating behaviors?

Hi! Everything you are doing now is to help you retrain your eating habits, which will make life after surgery easier. Kick the cravings for carbs and fried foods now so you aren't craving them after. Fried foods can still make me sick and I'm 5 years post op.
Straws make you suck in air and you don't want to have that in the beginning. Itll hurt. I use a straw all the time now. Caffeine, if you are like my husband you need your caffeine every day or you will get a headache, you do not want a headache sitting in the hospital waking up from surgery, for one thing they sure aren't giving you anything but clear liquids and your not gonna want more then a sip or two. The reason is also because it stimulates gastric acid secretion, anything thing you don't want to deal with ;-)
As for diet cola....you gotta give it up. I used to also be a diet coke junkie but after not having it for so long its disgusting. Just wean yourself off. Carbonation makes me feel sick.

I was also a soda "Coke Zero" junkie. I gave it up way before surgery and honestly I don't miss it anymore. Every once in a while it looks good when I see someone drinking it but... I bought an air fryer so I can still have some "fried" foods. It is my favorite kitchen gadget. I still have sweet potato fries but I cook them in the air fryer. I will bread some chicken occasionally and do the same thing. If you kick those prior to surgery you will have good luck not craving them. I still do not have my sweet tooth back and I am praying for it to stay gone as long as possible. Good luck!

There is a lot of information to try and absorb before and after surgery.
Take it slowly. Ask lots of questions of your surgeon. Make a list as you think of things as you think of them and take it with you to your appointments.
You need to fully understand what is expected of you to make the surgery work. It's not a magic wand - even though it seems like it in the beginning. You can't just go back to the way you used to eat and drink.
The surgery is not reversible so please make sure that you understand everything that is expected of you.
    Good luck :-)

It is all so overwhelming at first, I totally understand where you're coming from. But your surgeon/nutritionist will put everything in writing, and you will get to refer to it with ever question you have. It was like my bible. I had everything from exactly what vitamins I should take, the requirements of a protein drink, a food schedule to follow each week, etc.

The only part I found difficult (maybe not difficult, just not fun) was the pre-op diet. But I did it vacationing at a friend's lake house, so got to enjoy the lake, just not the delicious food and wine. But after that everything was super easy for me. I was lucky to have no complications. The weight just fell off. And then when you get to normal size super fast, it's so much fun, you don't want to go back. So you stay the course! Maintanance is NOT easy like losing was, at least not for me. It involves a conscious effort every day. So it's still fun being normal sized that it's totally worth it. I've worn the same clothes so long now they are going out of style. Remember that lake visit? The following year I was rocking a bathing suit. When I was fat I just sweated in capris and a t-shirt.

Caffeine is a dieuretic and getting and keeping your water is important. So never too much....as with all things, lol.
