Default does anyone actually get THIN after this procedure (not just LESS overweight/fat)?

    I am 5'9" male 54 years old.
was 165-170 w a 31 inch waist and very in shape athletic just 4-5 yrs ago.
    I am currently 375.
i quit smoking and gained 200+ lbs.
I have lost 100 and gained it back and then 50 and gained it back within the last few years.

    * i knew few people who have had sleeve and they were very overweight (like i am now) and they lost a lot, but they are still obese.
as i was when i lost 100 from my current 375.
i have read stats that people lost 1/2 their excess weight over the course of a year or year and a half.
I am 200 lbs over weight. does this mean i can ONLY lose 100 of the 200 I need to lose?
    why ONLY that much?
can i EVER get back to 165ish?

I would not be happy "only" being 275 and stll being 100 lbs overweight
sure, it would be better, but this would still be unsatisfactory to me.
i have never seen anyone do this actually be thin after a year or so,..only LESS overweight
    why?
is this onkly for morbidly obese who are happy being "less fat" ??

    please help
    thanks

Yes. People get thin. Yes.. People stay thin.

No its not for people who are happy being "less fat"...but any weight loss, however you approach it is a good thing.

The sleeve is not a magic wand for thin; it's a tool. If you use the tool correctly, you will see results. If you go back to your old habits & portions, you will gain weight.

Try using the search "glass" on topics.

Also, some of the long time weight loss success folks here will have lots to add. I'm two years out.

I am healthy again. I weigh between 132 -140 depending on life.

And I track my food and weigh myself every day.
    [I]HW: 240 lbs SW: 199 lbs GW: 140 lbs

    1 MO = 167.0 2 MO = 156.4 3 MO = 148.4 4 MO = 140.6
    5 M) = 136.0 6 MO = 130.0
    1 YR = 122.0 2 YR = 140.00 2.5 YR = 139
Happy with my weight; happy with my size; over-the-moon with my health!

    thanks for reply
    nice to hear

yes, pf course old ways would lead to "failore"
i just didn't know if there was a lever of fatness that was too far gone.
maybe the people i have seen are just happy w losing some...or maybe they lost most and then gained some back
i was geting discouraged because i want to be my old self and would NOT be happy just being less overweight

i know handful of people who are still significantly overweight bit to them they are happy and succeful because rather than 100 or 00 over weight they are now only 50 or 100 overweight!
they are still obese..only now maybe they are off meds or can get on the floor and play w grand kids..again, i'm looking to regain my thin body, not JUST be mildy obese.
    thanks

Hi. I have a friend who has lost 210lb and another who has lost 147lb and both have been sleeved for one year. My specialist told me that on average you can lose 80% of excess body fat so it depends on you as an individual. However as Annie and anyone else will tell you, the sleeve is only a tool and not a wag ice wand, you still need to work so maybe your friends have not committed to the ‘work’ bit which will be why they are not slim. I hope that helps.

    Thank you !
those are te amounts lost in one year?

    another question...
those losses are from huge caloric deficit
so what happens once they/we/i get down to weight?\do we gradually eat more?
my friend was doing protein shakes the premier in cartons 4 a day. they are 160 cals each. that's only 640 cals a day.

When I am 170ish (a good weight for me) I maintain at 1,700ish and 2,000ish of exercising

So how do we eat once we don'r need or want to lose any more?

can we gradually eat more volume/larger meals ? or just more tiny meals?
sorry if all this info is here..I havent found it yet.
I am going to a seminar at my hospital but not for 2 weeks and I am eager to learn
    thanks

As time goes on you can eat more but never as much as you can eat before the sleeve. When you get to a certain weight and your body is carrying less than 20% excess fat your weight loss will stop but that’s a different weight for everyone. You then need to work out yourself how many calories you can consume to maintain that new healthy weight and that’s why a lot of people track what they eat. I’m new to all this but I have done an extensive amount of research . There are many on this forum that have been sleeved for years and are maintaining after getting to their goal weights and they all have different approaches to doing that. Yes the two friends I quoted above have lost that weight in one year, they were both sleeved in jan 2019.

Hi Woodhouse, sounds like you have a ton of questions as we all did when starting this journey. What I did was research daily for 9 months. You can research Youtube, Blogs, Forums, the information is unlimited out there. By the time I finally had surgery I felt like I was a walking encyclopedia of gastric sleeve information. It took months for me to feel comfortable and ready for this amazing tool that is changing my life. You have to be ready and totally committed. Hope this helps. Of course continue to ask questions on here, there is a wealth of experience.

The doctor has to give you the statistics, but it's up to you. I got to a healthy BMI. I have to work to stay at a healthy BMI, even after 6 years. So it's totally up to how hard you are willing to work to change your lifestyle. Totally doable!! Good luck!

In my opinion, just being mildly obese would be failing. Being overweight would be failing. I wanted to be a regular person, and I am. You can do it too! Watch some Dr. Yuong videos on YouTube, they are super motivating.

I don't know if I'm thin. Maybe a formerly obese person can never see themselves as thin. I know there are a whole lot of people here skinnier than me! But like I said, regular sized and healthy BMI was my goal. Loving it!

Here's a Dr. V video on YouTube I'd recommend watching, sort of talks about statistics. I'm doing it, but he's still telling me, "Don't get cocky!"

    great !
    Thanks
that is what i wanted to hear (read) !
i *USED* to be "regular" (sized anyway ) and had a bunch of life stuff happen all at once and my eating just took over.
as i looked into this i was getting discouraged after seeing so many celebs (Carnie, Roker) who gained back or people who I knew who did it and were still quite overweight.
I thought perhaps I had hit a point of no return. I am glad it is not a physical impossibility & that i CAN do it and reverse this and get back to a normal size
    I am determined
    thanks

    Woodhouse,
You can get back to the size that you want to, or possibly even better. You have to be willing to put in the work. Even after six years, I am still learning and still willing to try new things. You have to decide once and for all to make a commitment to yourself. As Sally said, the sleeve is merely a tool. It is not the miracle. It will help you lose 80% of your excess weight (according to my sleeve dr.), the rest will be up to you. Maintenance is a challenge, you will be able to eat more as time goes on, but by then, you will have lost a significant amount of weight. It all starts with the head. Don't look to your friends. Think about YOU and what you are willing to do to get back into the best shape possible.

Woodhouse, Roker goes up and down (he's down right now).
For the sleeve to work, you have to use it as a tool -- and I can't imagine traveling and working weird hours making maintenance any easier!

That said, he is way more healthy than he was.

As so many folks said, yes, you CAN!

I lost my weight very quickly. Maintaining has been a learning process, but not hard.
My BMI is under 23! And I didn't have surgery till I was 65. Turning 68 in May.

I'm not even really active due to some other health issues, but people like sraebaer and Ann2 and some others are out having grand adventures with their renewed health, energy and lives.

    Go for it!
