Default post-op struggle - asking for hubby

    Hi!

My DH had his sleeve done 11 days ago. The first week was super - no issues, no problems with neither fluids nor proteins, but after 8 days that changed. He now is almost constantly nauseated, he has vomited a few times, and feels very weak in general. Initially he took soma, an anti-acid to reduce acids in his stomach poach, but he got terrible ulcers on his hands (skin), and had to stop it. We also thought that is why he feels the way he does.

he called the clinic yesterday, but didn't feel any support or got any advice that could sort this out. We will call again tomorrow morning - but until then; what you you think it is? Could there have developed any complications? Or should we just relax and hope it gets better?

He has no fever or pain - just weakness, nausea and vomiting. I guess I also should mention that he has meds fro reduce nausea (prescription), and they worked fine the first few days, but now he vomits if he takes them.

    Anyone?

My only advice is to get back to his surgeon asap. This really isn't normal and needs to be investigated by a medical professional. Don't stop until you get this sorted. If for some strange reason your surgeon isn't helpful get a second option. Perhaps your PCP could offer some assistance.

For sure get him in the doctor or get a med change called into the pharmacy. Many things can cause nausea. Stomach acid..so maybe a med he can take. Also a new nausea med. I always like Zofran that melts in your mouth. Weakness and lethargy is normal is a drastic difference in nutrients. I had supplements and self-administered RX vitamin injections.

Please let us know how he is doing. Hopefully the doctor can prescribe something that will make him feel better.

We have met with the surgeon today. Blood work, examination etc done - and no side effects from surgery detected. But, hubby has gotten a good dose of IV fluids, change in meds (he's now on Zofran) and also a change in anti-Acids (now on Nexium). He feels a bit better. The doctors theory is that his body has a major reaction to all the changes, maybe more than what could've been expected. After all he has lost 14 kgs in only 11 days...

He feels slightly better, but most importantly is that we know that there's no leakage, no bleeding or any other major complications.
I am definitely feeling relieved, and hope and pray that he will be able to get up his protein intake from now on.

Thank you for all your support!

So glad you updated, and he's gotten a bit sorted out. I struggled (still struggle) with nausea and some vomiting (well, toad-froth vs food). But only when I eat too quickly, or too much.

Learning the "stop" signal is a bit tricky. He can always eat again later, but once down it's sometimes a bit of a challenge. After the first six months, I can usually stop myself before it gets icky. But if not, I crush up 1/2 of a Tums tablet for antacid, and it seems to help.

Please keep us posted. And he's so fortunate to have you in his corner
