    Default It’s done!

So I am in the hospital one day post op. The surgery went well, but yesterday I was in so much pain which kind of shocked me. I thought it wouldn’t be this painful. Today I am a bit better, just did a lap around the ward. The problem is drinking anything. Any time I zip I get a stomach cramp which makes it very hard to drink anything. Is it going to go away? Anyone experienced this after surgery?

You are swollen and it's difficult for even the liquids to go down comfortably. Try some warm beverage, like decaf tea and our patients find that soothing and easier to get down. Don't be put off by the liquid hurting, we tell our patients to begin with a shot glass full of liquid which should take 20 minutes, then walk around and 20 minutes later drink another shot glass taking another 20 minutes. Walking and releasing the gasses make swallowing easier also. I've seen patients who say the same thing, choose not to persist in sipping and come back dehydrated a day or 2 after discharge. Swallowing the liquids is like having a full time job in the beginning, but don't give it up. It really does get easier as time goes on Continued success!!

I was given cups of ice chips and told to suck on them and let the liquid sort of leak down the back of my throat. It certainly helped. It was no time before I was able to sip water. As said above maybe try warm liquid. As you have been told it is really important to get your liquids in. dehydration is no fun.
Hope it gets better for you soon.
