    Default Stem Cell Treatment?

I may have asked this before, but has anyone had any experience with stem cell treatment as an alternative to orthepedic surgery?

Long story short, hurt my shoulder slipping on ice Christmas shopping and then made it worse at body pump class. After numerous cortisone shots the doctor is now recommending a complete shoulder replacement. Nothing is torn, but there are some partial tears. Lots of arthritis. I feel I would die being laid up for 6 months. (Just got my Ikon ski pass in the mail!!) Being active is what keeps off my weight. But after climbing mountains with my hiking sticks for a week, my shoulder really hurts. And we're planning on helping our son move this weekend. I guess I will clean with my left hand.

I had a friend who was told she needed a knee replacement, went the stem cell way, and is pain free. But that's only one example. Other friends call it "hocus pocus." It is not covered by insurance. But neither was my sleeve, and look where that got me! Healthy and regular sized.

    Anyone done it? Advice?

I am sorry to hear about your shoulder problems.
But I have no experience whatsoever with that stem cell treatment, not do I know anybody that has.
I hope you will find an answer soon.
    Is it expensive?
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

When I was around one year post-op (Jany 17) I had severe issues with my knees to the point where I couldn't walk. I was actually increasing my walking regimen too much, one pain in the left knee transformed into both knees being painful (because I kept on walking and pushing myself, that was stupid).

During a function where we had to stand for like one hour, at some point my knees got locked and my husband had to find and office chair on wheels so we could get back to the taxi.

I was having a post-op with my bariatric surgeon a few days later, he said that the situation was bad and he organized an appointment with a specialist in knees/sport medicine (who's treating national teams...he has a great reputation).
The specialist sent me to Xrays, I was really worried it was going to be bad news with my knees gone and surgery needed, but actually it was "good news" and I only had painful tendinitis. The doc said I had basket players knees which I found hilarious since last time I was jumping on regular bases was 30 years before when I was doing intensive ballet.
Anyway, he offered several solutions and good advice. First he said : give it time and lots of rest, stop walking 10 kms per day it's only making things worth...
The cream was working really well (Voltaren) and I was able to walk 30 minutes after application, but side effects were huge (arrhythmia and I felt like I was drunk) and scary so I didn't use it again. A few months later I was reading the side effects of that drug are bad, even for the gel...not just the tablets..I didn't even question the gel since it was a local application (silly me!!).

Doc said that we could try RPR injections (your own blood is taken and put in a "blender" and they reinject the plasma to the area that hurts.) The specialist said that he had amazing results with his teams. People with bad injuries did recover after 3 weeks to one month.

When I looked at the price for the injections, it was around 300$ for just one, my insurance was not going to cover it...I decided to try something else in between and do that only if the situation was not improving, gave myself one month.

I took high dosage of turmeric capsules and marin collagen daily, and did massage my knees with Emu oil. In less than three weeks, my pain was almost gone, I went back to my speed walking little by little and was ok with moderation.

So I never tried the injections myself, but did lots of reading about it and I do trust it is working, I know several people who did it and had positive results.
If your shoulder's damages are on tendons and ligaments, that might work very well. If it was me I would try if nothing else worked.
If it's not your tendons and ligaments....I'm not so sure it would help...

    Good luck and take care!

PS : almost forgot about Aloe vera. It could help a lot to drink some juice, because it does decrease inflammation.
Like for all issues with our bodies, it's important to look at the whole picture, not just the symptoms. Treating just the symptoms sometimes it useless because it would come back in an other way. For many obese (or ex obese) inflammation is the root of most issues. That and deficiencies, since it's linked. How is you iron level, and vitamin D?

HI I know how you feel. I don't know anything about that kind of treatment. However, I agree the cortisone injections don't always work, but perhaps have them done by a musculoskeletal expert. I have just had my second injection, but he first injected saline into the area to help it stretch a bit. I have been pain free now for 2 weeks, can move my arm above my head, can do my bra up and exercise. Now that I am pain free my PT says we have to work on that area so that when the injection wears off, I will have more flexibility and hopefully the pain wont come back. We do exercises to strength my rotator cuff, shoulders etc, very light weights. I have stopped all body pump classes for now and only do the exercises my PT has given me and I try and incorporate a spinning class. Wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully you will back to all your sports soon. x

Thanks for all your advice guys! I think I am going start with a prescription for PT, my insurance pays that 100% up to 20 visits. I am not sure why my doctor never even mentioned that as an option, he kept trying the shots. Then if that doesn't work I can go from there. Seeing no tendons or ligaments are torn (one is at less than 50%) cutting my whole shoulder open doesn't make sense. And the stem cell therapy is in the thousands of dollars.
