    Default All was great until

Today..I’m 16 days out and today has been a nightmare. I woke up fine and started to drink a protein shake when a serious stomach ache happened followed by some pain in my upper back. I figured it might be constipation and took some milk of magnesia but the constipation seems was not the case. I was in a lot of pain so I took some pain meds and feel asleep. Woke up a few hours later feeling a lot better and tried some yogurt and it seemed that all was fine until about 20 mins later when the same pain returned. About and hour went by and finally I vomited after some serious nausea. Perhaps some others have experienced this and can give me some advice? Thanks in advance!

    Neal,

I recommend that you call your surgeon ASAP.

Within 3 days I had a similar experience which turned into severe complications, 4 more surgeries and 4.5 months in hospital.

    I was perfectly OK, then I wasn’t.

You may not have a serious problem however, debilitating pain and vomiting could be a sign.

    Please keep us updated ;-)

    Hi Cyndi,
Thanks for the reply..Was your experience constant pain or did vomiting provide temporary relief?

The pain was constant and vomiting provided temporary relief. Because of that I waited longer than I should have. My husband was insistent that there was something wrong. He is my Superhero!

Statistically the most complications for the sleeve are during the first month. And the stomach is not healed for at least a month.

Please follow what our friends say and go see your surgeon asap!

I just had a stomach repair and at around two weeks had an issue, made the mistake to go to the ER next to home, and learned the bad way that I was better going directly to my surgeon and drive the 2H30!!
    .
Same thing for the sleeve in 2016, I had dehydration and a kind of stomach bug around week 3, went directly to my surgeon (he was not that far) and he fixed my issue in no time.
I hope for you it's nothing major, but better safe than sorry!

Last night around midnight I went to a Level 1 ER and had a CT scan. The E.R. doc said no leaks blockages or strictures and apparently talked to my Bariatric Surgeon and they discharged me(not without a fight tho, long story) . The E.R. doc said to just basically to take pain meds if it hurts and shut up, I was pissed. She could give me no possible reasons for my pain and was extremely condescending. I requested to eat something before they discharged me and I did feel ok(of course I was on morpheme). Today I am still in pain with just water so I guess I’m going to suck it up until I talk to my surgeon who is MIA.

I am so sorry, they did not give you the help that you needed...
When is your own surgeon coming back?
In the meantime, what I would do, is back to week 1 for a little while.
Your stomach is obviously upset with something and telling you it does not want the food you put in there right now.
I've read here about a broth with extra proteins in it.
Just clear liquids for a couple of days and see how that goes.
Don't worry about nutrition now, you have plenty of reserves to go on for some time.
    Can you take your vitamins?
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

If the scan is good, it's really good news. They would see a leak or any nasty business. At least you know now it's not life threatening, that's important!!
But Geez those awful doctors!! it's just everywhere!! seems the God-complex is extremely contagious in that field!! one would think they picked that field to help people who suffer, not be judgmental and dismissive!! oh my....French doctors are also so awful...I understand your frustration!! I saw FIVE surgeons before I could find a good one I trust to do my stomach repair!! so frustrating!!

    Anyway..
I agree with Simonne, bone broth is a good option to get protein and give some rest to your GI track.

If you were further along I would suggest to take some strong probiotic too, but so early after surgery it's better to wait until the sutures are healed before adding supplements (after one month).

If I was you I would journal my food and symptoms (with date and time etc) just to make sure you are not reacting to something you eat.

I discovered the first month post sleeve my stomach couldn't stand cruciferous veggies any more (bye bye brocoli, my lovely cauliflower...), or even my fav bell pepper...took a while to be able to eat those. Still three years later cauliflower is only possible in tiny quantity....and not often...

I had awful stomach cramps after eating the wrong veggies, and it would make me sick one full day, even after just one spoon!! (nobody told me about possible issues with veggies pre op, and I did see the nut ..)
Same thing for milk...couldn't stand it for several weeks (shakes from whey, big no no!! I could only get vegan shakes).
So hopefully it's just food intolerance!! and that should be only temporary...fingers crossed!!

    Take care!

I’m so sorry you were treated so shabbily by the ER staff. I dumped my primary because of this kind of treatment...or lack there of :-(

As Sandra said...I’m happy your CT scan showed nothing life threatening. Mine was and I still have problems with vomiting, sensitivity to foods, etc. I log everything that passes my lips.

I try not to be alarmist. However, I wouldn’t want anyone to experience what I experienced. When I read pain and vomiting, I will always err on the side of caution.

Simonne has the right idea. I lived on bone broth and other clear liquid protein for quite awhile. I couldn’t (and still can’t) take conventional OTC vitamins. I use PatchMD vitamin and mineral patches daily.

Camp out on your surgeon’s doorstep if you have to!!!

    Please keep us updated ;-)

So this will be my 3rd time at the E.R. in 3 days.. the worst part for me is getting stuck again with an iv (I know guys are wimps with this stuff) and waiting to get a bed. Last nights journey my poor wife and I waited 4 hours to get into the E.R. just to leave for another facility. I just can’t drink anything without pain and thats with taking 10 mg of hydro-codeine. I’m already dehydrated today after 2 saline bags last night at the E.R and can’t risk exasperating my condition..Finally my surgeon called back an hour ago and he’s going to admit me at the hospital by my home so thats good news. I’m really trying not to regret getting this VSG but I’m super frustrated. Anyway, Please keep in your prayers. Neal

I’m glad your surgeon is aware and taking action.

At the risk of repeating myself...

With all the VSG related issues I’ve had and continue to have I wouldn’t go back to pre-sleeved even if I could.

    Please keep us updated ;-)

Neal, how ghastly you have been treated. Shame for them!

I'm feeling relieved you've been admitted and they can sort you back out. Don't regret the sleeve yet....at almost 2 years, I have some patches of toad froth and/or vomiting periodically. I have concluded it is NOT my sleeve. But I did have a bleed early on and a second surgery with transfusion. Once I was properly back together, things have been great unless I eat too fast or too much (usually they go together).

Prayers and gentle hugs. Please keep us updated!
