Default Saxenda may not be a good idea

My weight loss surgeon was contemplating prescribing me Saxenda to help “improve” my weight loss (since I am a band to sleeve, I lose weight a lot slower than an average patient). So as any responsible person would do, I researched it. I am disturbed by the side effects: possible thyroid tumors (including cancer), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallbladder problems (including gallstones), increased heart rate, kidney problems (kidney failure), and depression or thoughts of suicide. I can’t believe it was approved by the FDA although I have to be honest, I don’t know the exact percentages on each side effect. Thank you, but no thank you, I’ll just plow along slowly and eventually I hope to lose the weight.

To be fair, if you Google any prescription they're all going to have crazy side effects. They aren't even necessarily side effects caused by the drug, but they have to list every single thing that was ever reported even if the drug didnt cause it. Have you ever looked up the possible side effects of vaccines? I dont recommend doing so if you haven't already. That'll make you crazy.

I think the question here is: how do you feel about the "slower than others" weight loss?
    Is it really bothering you?
Or are you content as it is?

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
I agree with Katrina that a lot of medication has side effects.
And when it is really needed, there is no argument.
But do you really need it?
Only you can answer that question.
    Just my two cents...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Slow is still a speed moving forward. And while I'm not familiar with that drug, I do know I've learned to be cautious about any medications (at one point they had me on 17 every day -- thank goodness the sleeve helped resolved most and now only 4 plus my vitamins). Perhaps learning to accept your bodies idiosyncrasies is a part of the journey -- it has been me!

    I Ditto Katrina and Simonne.

When I write a”pros and cons” list, if the cons outweigh the pros the answer is NO.

You seem to be happy about the way you are accomplishing your own goal. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly...;-)

Indeed meds have side effects, but I'm surprised your surgeon would consider meds when you are not even one year out.

It took me two years to lose 100 pounds and even if it is frustrating and annoying to see others who lose the same in one year, it's better for the body to lose slowly (less risk for the gallbladder actually, better for the skin etc) but also it takes some time to get use to the new body so it does help on that aspect too, not dealing with sudden drastic change!!

And also when you are losing, you are not regaining!! (was always thinking about that when disappointed at my scale...)

Many of us in here have a background with decades of diets, hormonal issues, thyroid issues etc.. which does have the same effect as a second weight loss surgery : lower BMR, slower weight loss etc....

So no worries Lisa, and you are doing the right thing no taking useless poison, because may be you would lose quicker, but then you would need other meds for the side effects??

no way....too risky....and that's not something you need to save your life like a vaccin (yes vaccins have side effects, but heck it does protect against deadly diseases, especially for my family who travel the world I consider it's compulsory) or that awful asthma medication that does save my life and make me swell like a balloon....here it's your choice, and you are completely right not to listen to your surgeon! plus let's be clear, surgeons are not pharmacists or nutritionist, I trust them about surgery because it's their field, for the rest....hum...not always...

You can have a look at your progress at one year and then decide if you need more help. There is many natural supplements helpful for weight loss, acupuncture does wonder, and even massages can help.

You save yourself from more medical issues here, who knows what will be discovered about those meds, it's been used for five years only, side effects are sometimes only publicly disclosed after ten years, when enough "guinea-pigs" got sick, and class actions start!!...argh!!, weight loss medications are such a huge money maker...

Lisa...I did not realize you were band to sleeve conversion. You are doing GREAT!! Yes all second weight loss surgeries lose slower. There is a bunch of research on it. Do not sweat it. As for the drug, I probably would not take it either even though side affects are super common with any drug. Even blood pressure meds have tons of possible side affects. And while they are relatively low possibility, the fact that they exist is enough to make you think twice.
