    Default You Can Do It!

As an old-timer, I get a little frustrated at some posts here where people aren't following what their doctor tells them. We all had nutrition classes, we all learned what/how to eat, we all learned about vitamins and everything else. We all know what to do before and after surgery. In fact my nurse at the hospital told me bariatric patients are the most knowlegable patients she has! (Makes sense, as other surgeries probably don't give you time to research!)

Please don't make up your own rules, it can be outright dangerous. You are given a pre-op diet for a reason, to make for a safer surgery. Don't eat food before scheduled after surgery, that could cause serious issues with your healing tummy. Don't say you can't drink your liquids, sip every waking moment until you do, or you'll end up back in the hospital with dehydration. Don't say you can't meet your protein goal, or you'll never get your energy back.

Just do what your nutritionist and surgeon tell you. They know what they are talking about. This works! Rant over.

If you have serious complications where you literally can not do what you should, contact your surgical team right away.

English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

While I agree with everything you say, and I'm trying to sip all the time. I'm having pain every time the liquid hits the top of the stomach. Hot- cold room temp, makes no difference. Ive talked to my Dr. And we have come to the conclusion that I'm very swollen at the top and thats the cause of the pain. I will keep trying to get the 64 oz of fluid. Evrything else is goong great.

It seems a few don't receive clear guidelines, or don't understand what's on paper??

The "can't drink" is a real thing, post op after the sleeve, I was on an IV for three days since I was vomiting the whole time I was trying one sip of water. Indeed I was in hospital...but for sure I see a link between that and "can't drink" later. I was probably very swollen...and drinking was an issue for months.

Here again, I'm one month post-op from my stomach repair, probably very swollen again. Drinking is fine this time but many things I "should be able to eat" are still a big no no.
I can't stand most meat or even fish (pureed!) ...same for veggies...

I see a common point between my two surgeries, or even just an endoscopy made me sick for three days.
I'm lucky my first team was available, same for my second one, it wouldn't have been the case if I went public with those "never available doctors".

I'm guessing some of our fellow sleevers don't have good teams to support them, or didn't receive any guidelines??

Anyway, post-op, with new sensations and new pains, a few people might be overwhelmed and just reach out here because it's easier??

Glad you've talked to your doctor. How about trying to just wet your mouth continually with the tiny sips? Glad everything else is going great and hope you can tolerate liquids soon! I was so lucky to have no complications, and I'm sorry for those of you who weren't that lucky.

Ive been doing better every day. So we know I'm headed in the right direction. Just means more updates for the Dr. I was told to text him nightly in the hospital, I'm having to text twice a day just so he knows where I'm at liquid wise. Everything else has gone great. Little pain. Up and walking around the block (slowly) after 2 days. Just the liquid part has me. And I'm working on it.

    Many DITTOs ^^^^^^^^^^

I had SEVERE COMPLICATIONS, 5 surgeries in total, and had to get in liquids and protein or wind up back in hospital after spending 4.5 months there.

I used ice cubes. It gives a trickle effect. I also froze Isopure clear flavored protein in ice cube trays and used them the same way...trickle effect.

Sometimes you have to think outside of the box ;-)

Sharon, thanks! Even at almost 2 years, I go through all my doctors stuff periodically, because even though it should be automatic to follow after this amount of time, it is not. I have to be reminded its not about weight or size, its about optimum health.

And there is a reason that information helps -- as No Ears, the Winnebago chief said, "failure to gather enough precise information is the reason we die". Well he was talking about whales, but you get the idea
    [I]HW: 240 lbs SW: 199 lbs GW: 140 lbs

    1 MO = 167.0 2 MO = 156.4 3 MO = 148.4 4 MO = 140.6
    5 M) = 136.0 6 MO = 130.0
    1 YR = 122.0 2 YR = 140.00 2.5 YR = 139
Happy with my weight; happy with my size; over-the-moon with my health!
