    Default Eating Out

It still drives me CRAZY after 5 years when we eat out with a group and then they just divide the check evenly, like tonight it was 6 of us and we divided the check by 3. Excuse me? Did no one NOTICE I had no appetizer? No huge expensive entree? No 2 alcoholic drinks? No dessert? I had water and the ahi tuna appetizer. This shouldn't bug me but it does.

Hope they all get fat. Just kidding. Maybe not.

I get it but I still split the bill by however many we are.
It's just "one of those things" to me. Like paying for a full meal and only eating a quarter of it. Often it's not suitable to take the remainder home so it gets left.
I have to admit that when it is just my partner and I eating out now the bill is very small - no alcohol for either of us. Cheap date night ;-)

I understand completely! so frustrating to pay for someone else's food! especially when it's recurrent!

But like Lisa said, sometimes it's just easier to split the bill, plus all the leftover we can't take with us is also paid for and not eaten..sometimes I just shrug and pay...still annoying!

A very close friends who knows I had bariatric surgery actually always offer to pay the check in full since "I eat and drink nothing". So since it's for lunch and it's not expensive, what we do is he pays twice a month, I pay once. It's pretty fair that way.

But once recently, we were a big group and I knew it was mainly big appetite all around (and very thirsty!!), I did say before ordering we would pay separately since I just had surgery and was having soup and water only, and my husband one main (never eat dessert) and no alcohol since he was driving . They said ok! and at the end, when it was time to split they actually paid for us since it was so small...we were supposed to pay 1/4 of what each couple paid...what a waste of money...

Anyway eating out is mainly a pain because most times it's for work and we can't really go where we want, the food is usually disappointing and I can't help to calculate what great meal I would cook at home with that money...since we are back "home" we eat less and less out, first because good restaurants in France are really expensive, plus I feel the quality is decreasing everywhere or since I'm getting older I'm also a better cook and I'm just more picky...

    I totally get that!
We always go Dutch (no pun intended, okay maybe a little).
We also don't eat meat, so eating out is for us often not so expensive as what all the others are eating.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Funnyily enough, I went out with some of my old co-workers yesterday. We always pay for what we have ordered individually. Luckily, whenever I go out either with friends or family we all say that we are paying separately. It's just not fair, especially since normally I order an appetizer as my meal and drink water.

This place also had a "no separate checks" policy for parties over 4. So I get it, it would have been a pain. Next time I'll get a fancy dinner too and bring home the leftovers.

I so prefer eating at home or out with just my husband where we pay for what we eat.

Hubby agrees with you Lisa, just take it as part of being with friends and don't stress. But just the tip of the 1/3 of the bill was twice as much as I ate!!

In the case of “no separate checks/4+”, I would order as the others in the party and take the leftovers home also.

Being on a fixed income, we’ve stopped “going along to get along”. We’re responsible for our own financial well-being.

Our friends and family accept us just the way we are ;-)

Ugh yes its sooo annoying to pay for food that your not eating. You could order a nice expensive entree to make up for no appetizer or drinks, and eat that food for a few days.

I think your plan to order as they do and take leftovers home will even out the fairness. I usually eat two or three more meals from my leftovers!

sraebaer - I hear you! I do NOT agree with the split thing. I seldom eat more than an appetizer (well and then I seldom finish it). I don't ever have a drink of any kind (except New Years and then we have one over 2-3 hours before going home to cook with friends).

I don't think there are "costs of friendship" involved. But if my husband picks up the check or is paying, I'm grateful that our friends don't generally do that.

I'd say get the appetizer and entree take a few bites of each and take the leftover home for 2-3 more meals. If anyone bitches then they brought the issue up and you can quietly make your comment on equity.

If everyone orders similar things it's not a big deal but drinks is the big one for me. Most of my friends we just trade off paying the whole thing. One lunch mine next one yours. But I have an in law that likes running up $100 bar tabs at $15 a plate places and I just ask him to pay for his own drinks. It's egregious and indefensible enough where he complies.
