    Default Not that bad

I am required to do the 2 week liquid diet pre surgery. According to the plan I can have lowfat low sugar yogurt, sugar free jello and pudding, and strained cream soups along with liquids. I have been getting 70-90 grams of protein and usually get around 700 calories. I am on day 9 and just want to offer some encouragement to all of those who are terrified of the pre-surgery diet (I know I was), it's not that bad! At my last dr visit my surgeon said "eh, just do the best you can" which took a lot of pressure off, but I'm happy to say I haven't cheated once! My theory is that most who are going through this have been obese for a long time, if not their whole life, and we have became "experts" at dieting, depriving ourselves until our bodies just say enough is enough and we stumble back into the binge eating that put us where we are. Obviously I am still pre surgery but my thinking is that it is just 2 weeks! We have all crash dieted for at least that..post surgery our bodies will be different and unable to tolerate massive eating so just get through these 2 weeks and then start with your new rituals. Again, I am no where close to being an expert or even remotely have any experience after surgery but for all of those of you dreading the preop diet, it is REALLY not that bad. It has made me even more excited and optimistic about life post surgery. I hope this eases some of the worries about it, I have often heard that it is the hardest part, I hope that is correct! Good luck...

    Great attitude.

The pre-op diet is probably the worst part of the whole process - and even then it's not really that bad.
It's for a finite time and there is great reward at the end :-)

Good on you for just getting on and doing it. :-)

Thanks for being a positive person! After day 3 (when the headache went away) I agree - it was totally something I could do. And it had been a while since I felt like that about eating. At 20 months, learning maintenance.

Thank you sooo much for the positive post. I’m sure there are many pre-sleevers that can use your experience and make it their own.

A positive attitude goes a long way. And you have a great message!

    It’s all a lot of fun ;-)

Best of luck as you embark on this amazing journey ;-)

I say that over and over again, stop wining and just do it!
Some people don't like me for that... o well...

I'm going to second what everyone else has said, I LOVE your attitude! I can tell you'll do great with that positive attitude going on. It really is so much fun. And I agree, the only slightly "difficult" part was the pre-op diet. Everything else was easy, at least for me.

I do remember my nutritionist saying she did the pro-op diet for 5 days (as I was required) and it was no big deal. I wanted to tell her "Sure, because you weigh 100 pounds and are 25 years old, how hungry can you get?" but I didn't.

Thanks for your post. I am on day 4 of my 2 week pre-surgery diet. Day one was really tough but each day is getting easier. Your positive attitude has given me a lot of confidence that I can get through this. My headache went away after 1.5 days and I’m keeping busy. I’m taking one day at a time and counting down to July 30th. Good luck with your surgery and here’s for our quick recovery and a lifetime of new positive experiences.

Well I'm 3 days post OP and only suprise so far is the pain. Day of surgery and day after were much worse than I imagined. Lots better now though. Water and protein is a chore to meet goals but doable. 1st 2 days I was asking myself what the hell did I just do, but I'm already through that.

    Thank you for the update.

The first three days can be a b**ch!

Sip, walk, rest, repeat. It gets better one day at a time.

I’m happy to hear that you’re doing well ;-)

    Hooray!

Congrats on 13 lbs gone. You’re well on your way to a healthier lifestyle!

Along with soup and refried beans you can add puréed anything.

Post-sleeve 2 week stomach is about the size of a fat pencil. I really had to train myself to chew (even puréed) food 30 times before swallowing and waiting a few minutes between bites. Now it’s second nature. I’m grateful I still have a strong restriction.

Enjoy your journey...One Day At A Time ;-)

Cyndi, I totally agree with you about being thankful for the tight restriction. I'm 8 years post-op and I tell our patients here at the hospital not to rush into the various stages, to take it easy and be careful about the thought process of "Not Eating Enough" at a meal in the initial phases. I took very good care of my "surgery tool" and it's served me well as I still feel restriction and listen to it each time. That theory, Cyndi, is "spot-on" about restriction. I tell people, "honor your tool" and it will serve you well throughout the journey.

Continued success, Cjdave, you're going to love this journey
