    Default Hey-o! I'm new here.....

Good morning, I just wanted to say a quick hello. I'm a newly registered member and I am very thankful that I found this arena because I am completely on my own over here.

I had a sleeve procedure done on 5/16/19 in conjunction with a diaphragmatic hernia repair. Ouch.

Long story short - I was kinda bullied into the procedure and now I'm just hanging out trying to figure it all out.

I've lost about 45lbs thus far and for the last 3 days I've stayed right where I'm at; which I'm grateful for because my skin needs a hot minute to catch up. I'm almost halfway to my goal (I didn't start that high) and I'm like....9ish weeks out from surgery.

My name's Jess, I'm from West Palm Beach and I'm very happy to meet all of you.

    :-)

Hi Jess! I’m fairly new here too but have found that everyone is so positive and it has calmed me down so much - I hope it does the same for you! You must be feeling great with those 45 lbs down - congrats! Still waiting for my surgery date - can’t wait until I’m where you are - good luck!

    Hi Jess, welcome here!
Sounds like you are doing great.
But... just curious here, what do you mean when you say you were bullied into having wls?
    Bullied by whom?
    Bullied why?
That does not sound like fun...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

So, I am going to write a more detailed post in the journey thread soon but.....bullied.....in that I went to this surgeon for my hernia repair. He runs a bariatric program and told me that he wouldn't fix my hernia unless I agreed to a sleeve.

Long story short, I figured I had no options - I agreed to it, and I've had A LOT of complications since. Including a falling out with his office over it that has left me on my own.

Jess, it's not very "ethical" to bully someone to have an elective surgery such as bariatric or any other type for that matter. I would have found a new doctor immediately, but since you didn't, I'd certainly make the most of the tool that you have. There are lots of online support groups for patients, tons of information and take time to decipher the good/positive information. Just for your reference here are a couple of "tried & true" internet sites:
[LIST][*]World According to Eggface[*]Reddit - Weight Loss Surgery[*] Bariatric Eating - Bariatric Vitamins & Protein | Recipes, Nutrition, Advice & Support

I would find a primary that will work with you on blood work, dietitian that is familiar with bariatric, in-person support groups, etc. Heck, why not make the most of it and you might be surprised at the positive outcome and lifestyle! I wish you luck and this site is surely a great resource!

    Welcome Jess!

I’m from North Florida and I have a great Bari Team. They’re in St. Augustine. My Dr has taken on other VSG patients...even those who had their surgery in Mexico. Let me know if you’d like more information.

You’re at the best site for information, encouragement and support. We all have lots of fun, too ;-)

Hi Jess! Welcome! I'm sorry you we're given the sleeve without really wanting it but it has been a great tool for me and hopefully it will be for you as well. I lost fast, I went from 255 to 145 in 9 months. I ended up loosing too much, I'm 5'7" and when I hit 123 I was looking very boney and while that weight might look great on someone else my height it didn't look good on me. So I had a pass to gain, it took over a year to get back up. So my advice to you is to make sure you are getting in your protien and your water. Get an app to track calories. I use 'lose it' you enter in your height and weight and goal weight and it will tell you how many calories you need to reach that goal. You might find that your not getting enough calories. Definitely talk to your primary care doc about not having the surgeon in your life anymore and ask them to see you for post OP exams, or ask them to refer you to someone to continue your post OP care. I wish you the best! If you ever have any questions, or want to vent and share good news this site is the place to do it everyone here is awesome and so helpful. You can also send me a message if you ever need anything. Take care!

    Not ethical at all...

How do you feel about it now?
Do you think it will be difficult for you to adapt your life style to your sleeve?
is there anything in particular we can help you with?

Welcome to the for mum! It is a very strong support group. I found it worked better for me than the group at my bariatric office. They were very nice, but most of them were way younger than me and lots of questions about how to make exceptions to everything.

    So ask away!

Welcome! I'm a newbie too! There is so much good advice on this forum. I learned that if you do a search you will easily bump into a post of someone who has gone through something similar. (Which I found comforting.) 45lbs in just a few months??! Wow and way to go!

Sorry you were bullied into the sleeve, that's crazy. It's a major surgery that requires a lot of research/thought and your full "buy in." But if you were obese, I guarantee you won't regret it. I can tell you it's a whole new world out there being healthy and regular-sized! Best of luck to you.

Seeing I was self-pay, 3 months after surgery I was on my own. Then I started to work with my primary cary physician who is very knowledgable on the sleeve. She knows what blood work I need and when. Love her! Some PCP's are not, you'll have to research to find one who knows what bariatric patients need.

I am definitely enjoying the weight loss aspect of the surgery, even if I am at a loss of the details.

I work for a hospital and this surgeon runs a bari program in that hospital - so my insurance covered the procedure without complication. I did not need the 6 month supervised diet period or multiple visits. I went to my first hernia appointment with him, got cleared by psych, saw my on staff nutritionist twice, and then met with his nurse once before surgery.

I am lucky in that he provides all 18 month blood work scripts up front, and I will be able to have everything drawn and see the results myself. My brother is a trauma surgeon and did a bariatric rotation so he's been watching my levels right now. I did ask my PCP and she declined because she is unfamiliar with the process. Not sure where to go next - my insurance is good - but restrictive - and he is the hospital's provider for this surgery and follow up.

Since surgery, I've had cardiac issues - my heart has been anywhere from 130-160 bpm. I had to take on a cardiologist and am now on medication to slow that down. I contracted thrush in the hospital. I still have one open incision that is a bit infected - 8 weeks out when 4/5 incisions healed in 3 weeks or less.

I don't feel that I got the information to adequately prepare me for this or the support during and so far after. So I'm really glad that I found this and I have a safe place to ask questions and gain insight.

    Thanks everyone!
