    Question Caffine

Does anyone know why most pre and post-op diets have a restriction on caffeine.

Coffee and it's by products is very acidic and can damage the stomach lining. It does say in most guidelines to stop pre-op to prepare people so they can feel better when they can't drink it post-op, either way they would be in withdraw on top of the post-op pain/nausea etc.

I was allowed to drink some cofee at one month post-op after the sleeve.

I could have one cup a day after surgery. You can take away my stomach but not my caffeine! Supposedly it is dehydrating, but I still drink a lot of liquids so have never had a problem.

I've never been a big caffeine drinker, but the above comments are spot on -- and if you are taking medications or having anesthesia, you don't need a stimulus.

At 22 months out, I don't have any issues with coffee or tea -- but I limit the coffee to half caf/half regular, 2 cups. And I am not a diet soda drinker, so no other caffeine.

I gave up coffee pre-op and post op. As Sandra said, it’s hard on the stomach. In preparation for it I tried drinking decaf, but it’s just not the same flavor. My doctor says that one (just one) cup a day when I’m three months post op will be OK. Hallelujah! I have something to live for! ;-)
On a slightly different note, I gave up drinking about 6 months pre-op. Something I really like on a hot summer day (yesterday it was 110 here) is a gin and tonic. I’ve created a post op virgin version. I use sugar free tonic syrup (the kind used for the soda stream device) and mix it with flat water then add a drop of food grade juniper berry extract. Voila, virgin non carbonated G&T.

Thanks JannyAZ. I don't do alcohol (or fizzy drinks) either and this sounds like a nice alternative. Sometimes plain water just doesn't cut it :-)
Will have to see if I can buy the Juniper berry extract in NZ.

Lisa, I got it at some trade show from an outfit called doterra. I googled them and they are available in NZ. Make sure whatever you get is food grade.

    LOL!!!

Same here. I drink 1 cup of espresso every morning. I used to drink it all day long.

My Dr’s ok with one cup and so am I.
