Smile New here & This waiting for approval stinks!

Hello everyone. This is my first post and wanted to say hello! I have been on this weight loss journey for almost 2 years now. I'm a type II diabetic who used to weigh 360. Its important to note that I am also 6'1".

I started losing and came down to 320 when everything went wrong. My body started freaking out and started fighting me. I was eating well and working with a certified nutritionist and personal trainer when my weight loss just stopped. No gaining but no loss either. It was heartbreaking and frustrating. My doctor and I worked to try to get my weight to budge again and after lots of trouble shooting we found out that my number (glucose) was blasting up in the middle of the night. When we started testing I would get up at 3am to test and I would be 175-190 in the middle of the night.

Basically I was on a stuck cycle. The harder I worked to lose weight the more my body would freak out because it thought I was starving, mainly through the nights fasting. So it was dumping glucose into my body to keep me from starving and of course my pancreas couldn't deal with it. So any work I did during my days was erased during my nights.

My doctor prescribed Belviq for me and I stopped having this problem. I am down to 304 now. But of course I can't and don't want to take Belviq for life so here I am on the sleeve track because a smaller stomach should solve this problem for good.

So I am at the point now where I am waiting for my insurance company to approve me. It's been a week and a half now and I'm getting impatient. So instead of going stir crazy I thought that I would join a group to read experiences and share my own.

Sorry for the long rambling post but....Hello everyone !!!

    Hi.
It must be very frustrating for you - but it will be well worth the wait. :-)

Be thankful you have insurance, many of us did not. It will be worth the wait - promise!! Maybe while waiting start a little exercise routine, like short walks if you're able. Hope you hear soon!

The waiting is the hard part. You've come to the right place. We've all been there. Welcome to the site.

Thank you! I have been exercising for several years so now it's a normal part of my morning. And I agree, I am thankful to have insurance

    Welcome!

I went through the same thing, Belviq etc. The good news is...the co-morbidities are gone and have been since a few months after VSG!

I read everything I could here and watched a lot of YouTube videos pre-surgery.

Ask any/all questions you may have...we’re here to share our experiences and help you have fun with this amazing journey ;-)

Wow! That's great and is always wonderful to know that someone has gone the same thing that you have. Sometimes in the deep frustration it feels like you are alone and it's encouraging to know that I have the possibility of getting off of that medicine!

Welcome and get ready for the time of your life. I was self pay also, so from the first consultation to surgery date was just a couple of months. I had been considering it for such a long time, but wanted to make sure I was ready to commit to it 110%. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made, I just wish I had done it sooner.

Take this time to read up on what to expect and learn some major sleeve lessons from the many wonderful posters here who are so willing to share their personal journey's as well. It's a great, supportive bunch of people.

Ok so my insurance approved me on the 16th and now I'm waiting for the letter to arrive at my surgeons office. Why are they using snail mail still? There has to be an electronic system..... OH WELL... In the mean time I'm practicing my chewing things to death skills at every meal and not having my huge glass of ice water with every meal. I need to start the weaning now. lol ...

    YAY!

You’re getting closer and closer ;-)

It’s great that you’re practicing chewing your food to death. I use ice cubes for a trickle effect. It satisfies the “ice cold” that I love without filling me up before I eat (or while I eat).

You can also practice protein first, then veggies.

You’ll be an expert by the time you get your surgery ;-)

    Hi Rachel,

    Welcome to the forum!

I'm really sorry your diabetes is so unstable! unfortunately losing weight when you have that issue or any hormonal issue can be really really tricky.

    I'm wondering several things:

    - how many grams of carbs per day have you been eating during your work with the nutritionist?

    - have you heard of Dr Fung and his books? he has been able to "cure" people with diabetes, using only fasting and low carb high fat diet. I've been reading his three books over the years, really interesting (you can find videos on you tube). I'm not diabetic myself (except gestational diabetes) but it does run in the family.
My youngest child started to show signs a few months ago, I could tell something was wrong, she was pre diabetic. After a few months of changing her diet (I did study nutrition) and taking supplements, she is now out of the wood. To be clear, what I learned at school about nutrition for diabetics was all wrong! she was eating well before, with lots of veggies, lean protein and not much carbs because I was aware "obesity could be contagious". But for her it was still too much carbs.

    - finally, international guidelines recommend a gastric bypass when the diabetes is strong. Did your surgeon talk about it?
A friend was diabetic with really unstable numbers and her surgeon advised her to go for a bypass and not the sleeve. She has been diabetes free for several years now. Just wondering if you got infos about it.
