    Default Surgery Misconceptions

OMG, I joined WW and it has been super helpful for maintenance and tracking. I also enjoy the meetings. But then I got on their "Connect" message board. HUGE mistake. The ignorance toward weight loss surgery is mind-blowing. I want to tell these 300 pound people, good luck, but it isn't going to work. They are all "holier than thou" that their way is the only way. Here are some comments I have read about weight loss surgery. (But the way, I have deleted my account.)

Everyone who has surgery gains back all their weight. A bariatric surgeon told me this.

A friend had surgery and looks really funny, she only lost weight in her legs and arms.

They are not taught how to eat or how to change their lifestyle.

I know a girl from CA who was sent home after surgery with no information at all about what to eat or what to do.

My mom got thin but is so unhealthy she can't do anything anymore.

They are so lazy they try the easy way, and end up back where they started after all that pain.

    I know people who died.

At least with WW we are doing it the right way.

I would say the moral of the story here, besides people are idiots by acting like they are experts on something they know NOTHING about, is to NOT tell people you are having surgery. Just show them how amazing you are or are becoming! Newbies, tell the people you live with and no one else. Who wants to have the happiest time of their lives ruined by stupid people?

    Rant over.

    I love when you rant!

I'm on the Connect message board, and when someone says something about weight loss surgery, I usually just chuckle because they don't know what they are talking about. At WW, I've kept my surgery to myself. I haven't told any of them. It is funny because there is like a 10 year gap from the time that I left and the time that I've returned with 80 pounds gone (LOL). When I was having my surgery, I did not tell anyone including my then husband until a week before my surgery. Didn't want to hear any one else's opinions or fears.

I didn't chuckle, I responded and about got blasted with a zillion hateful messages. I'm done! I guess I should learn when to shut up. I haven't said anything at my meetings, but I really think they would be supportive. But just to be safe I won't mention the sleeve. I lost all my weight and became lifetime almost 30 years ago. Obviously then I gained it all back plus more. Went back to WW more times than I can count, always unsuccessful. Now I'm keeping it off.

According to Connect I must be the only unsuccessful person at WW. Amazing.

The connect board seems really disconnected from reality and science!

Many studies those past five years did show that diets don't work for obese patients. Of course if it's only 30 or 40 pounds to lose, people are able to maintain but when we reach 100 pounds, the body does fight too hard for anyone to successfully lose and not regain without bariatric surgery! it's an hormonal matter....the more you lose weight, the hungrier you get...

Many people are idiots and uneducated about obesity, even medical professionals...in French we say "culture is like jam, the less you have it, the more you spread it" it's a good way to say that most people are just big show off always pretending they are experts!! Sometimes I just prefer dogs..

    I knew I should'nt read your post...
Those stupid, ignorant reactions make me so mad!
You are right: don't tell people you are going to have wls.
Nobody needs that kind of negativity and verbal abuse.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Not to mention these people are just making this sh_t up! Seriously, a girl from CA had surgery and was sent home with no instructions? That's impossible. "OK, I've cut out most of your stomach. Good luck! Go home and try some popcorn."

I know in the states (and probably everywhere) you are never released from the hospital without a whole lot of discharge instructions. You even have to sign that you received them. Not to mention there is no way a bariatric surgeon would not give someone pre/during/ and after surgery instructions. If not they could die!!

    Ignorance at it's best.
I'm not sure where it stems from. Jealously perhaps?
I agree, only tell those nearest and dearest - those that you can trust to be supportive.
No-one needs any negativity around them especially at this time.

Trying to explain WLS to someone who is ignorant and judgmental and ignorant is like trying to explain an orgasym (sp) to someone who’s never had one!

I must admit, I have kept my surgery details to my immediate family only - at the end of the day its nobody's business but mine. My mother joined WW before I had my surgery and my father did his own style of weight loss - both have lost weight but wont keep it off.

My father joked that I should join when I had my surgery as I would probably win slimmer of the week most weeks, which I found highly amusing

My primary physician literally chewed me out when I mentioned that I was thinking of getting WLS during my physical last year. She told me she'd rather see me 'heavy' than consider the sleeve. I was 100 overweight, high blood pressure, sleep apnea symptoms and pre diabetic. WTH???

I joined WW in 2009. I lost 100 lbs in exactly one year. I went on to lose 60 more lbs but look where I am now .... going through the process of a sleeve because I’ve gained almost 100 back.

You will be thrilled with the sleeve! Best of luck to you! I too joined and quit WW more times than I can count. Lost weight, gained more, tried again, etc. etc. Never stuck.

MY PCP was/is actually super supportive. She's young, I wonder if the young doctors are more educated on the procedure. Seeing I was self-pay I can't go back to my bariatric team after all these years, and she knows what blood work I need and when. She is proud I've kept off my weight!
