Default Staying full for two or three hours

Hello everyone. I have noticed a lot of the time when I eat dense food like chicken, fish, beef or ham, it keeps me feeling full for two or three hours. This is a good thing in some ways, but I need to start getting my water in because I have a hard time getting it all in anyway, and I'm just too full. I usually eat only 2 ounces (occasionally 3) of meat plus maybe 1/3 cup to 1/2 of veggies. If I try to drink after 30-40 minutes, I feel so uncomfortable that I give up until the 2-3 hours have passed by. Does this happen to anyone else? If I'm eating cheese or peanut butter or light foods, it does not happen. Is there something I need to do and should I be concerned? I am 10 months out and have not had any real problems. Thanks for any responses and ideas that might help my worries. Barb

Could you drink before your meal? I think my nut said half an hour before. It is important to get in your liquids, but I know where you're coming from. When you're full, you're full. Try to shake up your eating habits a little to work the liquids in.

Thank you, I'll try that. I hadn't even thought about drinking first.

I was told stop drinking 30 minutes before you plan on eating, take 30 minutes to eat your meal and then no drinking for 30 mins afterwards. 3 times a day is 4 1/2 hours of non drinking time. It doesn't leave a lot of waking time to be able to get all your water in....but you have to try. I have a bottle with me all the time and just keep taking a sip as often as possible. I manage to get in 1 1/2 litres most days.
Dense protein definitely fills me up more than other types.

Great thread, and a solid question.

I hadn't thought about how different proteins make me feel....I do fine with my liquids, and most of the time hit the protein goal. More difficulty with the carb/vegetable goal. Salad daily. But always pick the protein out and eat first, lol!

I too stick with at least 30 min before and then 30 after, although if we are out, I may have a few (very few) sips of wine to be sociable. And the meal with chit/chat normally takes about 30 minutes to appear.

But diligence in the water is important. Your body/brain work on electrical to the nerves, and water is truly a conducter in all your cells....stated simply as I understand it.

As someone who passed out in a restaurant because of dehydration, this topic is really important. I have to make a conscious effort of getting my liquids in. Thankfully, since I am back in the gym I have no problem however, I really need to stay on top of my liquid intake. My suggestion is even when you're sitting and watching television or reading, make sure you have a bottle of water nearby so that you can take a sip. Sometimes if I spot the water bottle sitting on a table it triggers me to question "how much water have I had today?"

I follow the 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after rule as instructed by my Bariatric team, 3+ years ago.

    That said...

When my husband and I travel we eat out daily. In that case, I ask for ice cubes. It hydrates before and after with a trickle effect.

When I was first sleeved, I used sugar free popsicles. I also set a timer for ten minutes to remind myself to sip every 10 minutes until it became a habit.

I also find difficult to drink enough, but it was much worth the first year.
What I usually do is drink a big herbal tea mid morning and an other one mid afternoon. Since I stopped all snacks a few weeks ago, 3 meals are really enough, it's the best way to remember drinking, but also compensate the "no more snack"! A war drink is comforting and that way I know I get at least 1 liter of fluids minimum.

Drinking after a meal is also an issue for me, usually I have to wait at least one hour, unless I was having only soup/Greek yogurt, after those dinners I can usually drink after 30 minutes.

Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy day to reply. All are great answers and I will try them. I appreciate it so much. Several mentioned the rule to eat only 30 minutes, wait 30 minutes before drinking and I understand that, but my main problem is I can't begin to drink in 30-40 minutes, I am too full and I just can't. Today I tried to drink about 30 minutes before my meals and that worked pretty well. Thanks again! Love to you all!

I used to have the same problem.

I know there are surgeons that allow you to drink up to 15 minutes before each meal and I know of a few cases where even 5 minutes was okay (clear liquids that was).
Have a glass of water next to your bed and drink that first as soon as your feet touch the ground.
Make sure you snacks are light, so you can drink right after 30 minutes again.
Sometimes I also have to wait much longer than the 30 minutes after a meal, because I am still full.
But when I eat a snack like yoghurt, I can drink right after 30 minutes.
    Just try experimenting with that.
Set your alarm a half hour early in the morning and drink a glass of water, when you are still in bed.
Make your snacks a liquid, we have drink yogurt where I live.
    Little tricks like that.
But yes, the day can be too short to drink all that water.
It will get better though, over time.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.
